It caps at 144hz not 120hz in 1080p and supports even 240hz if you use subsampling although I probably wouldn't recommend it.

As for display port you want a cable that supports at least HBR2, that being Displayport 1.2 and higher

Note that regardless of version some monitors only support the max framerate over DP and not HDMI, you need to check the monitor specs.
