Hi Everyone,

I'm currently looking to build a more updated and faster editing rig to replace my 2012 Mac Pro. Its going to be a Hackintosh since sometimes I do use some of Apples apps like Logic Pro and just generally i'm a Mac person when it comes to productivity.

The parts i've got together so far are:

An Intel i7 4770K Quad core,

32GB G-Skill ripjaws 1600MHz,

Gigabyte Z87X-UD2H Mobo,

Although it doesn't really relate i've got a 1500W Powersupply, in a NZXT Phantom case with 4 new 3TB harddrives and i'm planning to put the SSD from my current Mac into this system.

This system I am going to run mavericks on, so far i've tested this using a cheap AMD card I had and OS X Mavericks runs great!

So what I want to know is what card should I use in this system? Price range anywhere up to $550 and ideally is should be compatible with OS X.

A little about my current system:

My current system for editing is the 2012 Mac Pro with dual six-core Xeon processors and a single Radeon 5770 card with 32GB of Apples RAM along with a RED Rocket card. Although its a fast system, especially after an upgrade to a 120GB SSD, editing in Premiere is becoming sluggish because recently i've started working with larger, higher bitrate R3D files from newer RED cameras (prevsiously I was only working with files from older RED Cameras like the RED One.

Although the new Mac Pro looks nice, the only reason I will not invest is because of my RED workflow, which is why I have the RED rocket card (which if you didn't know already you cannot put into the new Mac Pro) And yes i'm aware of thunderbolt enclosures, but i'd prefer just not to go that route as I don't really want all my hard drives and an enclosure on my desk.

Thanks for reading, I appreciate any help!

You're going to notice a huge performance decrease when going from dual 6 cores to a single quad core... Trust me..

I realize going from 12 cores to just 4 is a big decrease but the current processor total speed is 14.4GHz and the new 4770k i've OCed to 4.2GHz so its total power is 16.6Ghz, and seen as the Xeons are reasonably old, I don't consider it a down-grade.

What do you think? I was at one point considering to replace it with an i7 Six core, thoughts?

The thing is i'm not looking to replace what i've already got I'm only looking for a GPU, the RED Rocket can match and do more than a Quadro anyway which is why I have it aswell as a basic GPU

I would go LGA2011 as well or wait until the new 8 cores come out.

Even a standard card will render videos faster. Something like a 280X,770, etc. If someone have deep pockets then a firepro or quadro would do even better but only if they are supported. If it's a dual use system for gaming and rendering then a higher end consumer GPU will do fine in rendering but better in games.

I would have but seeing as you already have it, can't really go back now.

I'm not planning to use this system for gaming, I have a Razer laptop running windows for that, The RED rocket card helps alot with rendering though, Do you think I should sell then buy a totally new system?

What price do you think an open, used i7 4770k would go for? I guess then I could get the six core and take some money out of the graphics card budget, what do you think?

Depends where you live. If you have original box, heat sink, and proof of recent purchase I'd say it should sell pretty well.

I guess I will look into it, I still have everything. Any ideas for a graphics card though?

not too sure, but like others have said a high end red/green GPU should be fine for both editing and gaming.

if you dont have a 10 bit panel or use double precision then a quadro or firepro is just going to be slow and expensive. a gaming card is much faster with cuda and open cl. a gtx780 or amd r9 290 would be rapid.

If you want to sell it fast, put it at 300$. Fair price, also since it can only reach 4.2GHz it's mediocre at best. I got 4.7 on mine... stable at 4.6 tho
