Need help in picking a laptop to buy

Go to solution Solved by SadTech,

Are you going to need a lot of battery life or are you going to have it plugged into the wall majority of the time? I like this one personally. I would look for a i7 with 16GB of RAM, 16GB of RAM will last into the future. For sure Future proofed :)

  • i7-4702HQ processor
  • NVIDIA® GTX-860M
  • 16GB DDR3 Ram
  • I don't need the 4K resolution option
  • It's a slim 15 in laptop
  • Battery Life: 4 hours

Currently I am going graduate high school, so I have been thinking of buying a laptop during summer. I am a casual gamer who usually play games like League of Legends but at times want to play Battlefield 4 or Titanfall. It is fine if Battlefield 4 or Titanfall can't be played on the laptop (it's an option). I want to get a decent performance laptop with a dedicated graphics card and the battery life matters as I will be carrying it around in my university. I also want a laptop that looks pretty good and is portable, not like Alienware laptops (they're awesome gaming laptops, but not suitable for my needs) . Also, the weight of the laptop does not matter. I didn't write down the HDD and SSD, because I will swap out the HDD into a Samsung 840 Evo SSD (either 250GB or 500GB).

Some choices I have looked at are:

Samsung ativ book 8 NT870Z5G-X58 (samsung series 7 chronos)

or NT870Z5G-X78 with Intel® Core™ i7 Processor 4700HQ (2.40 GHz up to 3.40GHz, 6 MB L3 Cache) Intel HM86

  • Intel® Core™ i5 Processor 4200H (2.80 GHz up to 3.40 GHz, 3 MB L3 Cache)
    Intel HM86
  • 8GB DDR3L System Memory at 1600MHz (on BD 8GB)
    1 SODIMM
  • NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 750M Graphics with 2GB gDDR3 Graphic Memory (Optimus™)
  • Size: 376 x 249.9 x 20.9mm (15 in laptop)
  • Maximum Battery Life: 11.5 hours

Samsung ativ book 6 NT630Z5J-X54S (was released in Samsung's Korean website)

  • Intel® Core™ i5 Processor 4200U (1.60 GHz, up to 2.60 GHz, 3 MB L3 Cache)
  • 8GB DDR3L System Memory at 1600MHz (4GB x 2)
    2 SODIMM
  • NVIDIA® GeForce® 820M Graphics with 2GB gDDR3 Graphic Memory (Optimus™)
  • Size: 375.9 x 247.9 x 22.8mm (15 in laptop)
  • Battery life isn't specified but Samsung's battery life usually lasts long enough and the processor allows battery to last longer.

Lenovo Y50 (not released yet)

  • i7-4702HQ processor
  • NVIDIA® GTX-860M
  • 16GB DDR3 Ram
  • I don't need the 4K resolution option
  • It's a slim 15 in laptop
  • Battery Life: 4 hours

Feel free to give any other suggestions. The price range I am looking at is from $1000 ~ 1200 (1300 ish) with the size of like a 15 in display.

Thanks :)

I think the y50 will be a pretty good option if you can wait for it to release. Take a look at MSI apache edition laptops they have them in 15-17 in sizes. Also Asus has a few g750 series that fall I to that price category I think.

Go with any laptop which has the best GPU and an i5 or better ( ofcourse with 8GB ram and your storage preferences ).

4 hours of battery life should be enough. And thanks for the awesome replies :)
