If you are running esports title yeah but in gaming performance generally gpu is more important than the cpu so  if you have a high end rtx card or the 6000 sereis from amd it will be worth it but if not don't upgrade

I have an ASUS G14 2021 with Manjaro KDE and I am a professional Linux NoOB and also pretty bad at General Computing.

I have the upgrade itch....

Currently rocking a 2600X, would I see an improvement to performance if I upgraded to a 5600X? (Would require BIOS update for compatibility)

Tasks:

Moderate gaming

Light video encoding/transcoding

General computing

You could and but then you would be gpu bottlenecked, you have a pretty balanced system as is, only upgrade if you really need to

Hope my response helps 🙂

Would I notice a difference for video encoding? (Genuinely curious, not trying to justify the purchase)

Yes you would but the difference wouldn't be massive considering the 2600x and 5600x have the same number of cores / threads

Hope my response helps 🙂

5600X gives 2600X a solid spank by the looks of things. I went from a placeholder 3600XT to a 5600X and saw gains all around. it’s just a better CPU in general.

I've got a second computer with a 9600K and RX 580 4GB. In the (admittedly few) games I've played on it, I was totally GPU bound at 1080p. I know the 9600K offers better gaming performance than the 2600X, but the difference isn't night and day massive. Additionally, I got the RX 580 from a friend whose computer had a Ryzen 5 2600 (non-X) and he was also GPU bound in basically all of his games, which is why he upgraded to the RX 6600 XT (he was lucky enough to get it for MSRP) and it was only then that his CPU started to struggle.

I'd save your money for now. It's looking like GPU prices are finally starting to come down for real, so I'm hopeful that later this year there will be some reasonable deals. If you could get an RX 6600 for around the $300 mark, that would offer you a performance improvement that you would actually notice in both games and video encoding.

And I know for the opposite reason: the computer with the 9600K used to have an RTX 2060 Super in it. The RX 6600 and RTX 2060 Super are basically identical in rasterization performance. I can tell you that I noticed the downgrade, so you'd certainly notice the upgrade. Then when GPU bound, and upgrading from the 9600K to the Ryzen 9 5900X, I honestly don't notice a difference when gaming with the 2060S.

Your system is well balanced. You made a good choice with that pairing. Enjoy it for now and, when the time comes, you'll be able to experience an upgrade that's really worth it.

Well, I think it is a good upgrade. You can slowly upgrade your parts later, such as your motherboard and GPU later on.
