Per title I'm finally getting around to building a server for my home network as I'm looking to consolidate a lot of random on goings to one machine to keep an eye on.

Unraid seems to be the route I want to take from what reading I been able to find and have put together a list with tax time coming up I should have the funds to make this happen.

These are the current plans for what I want to do with the server and will have a parts like below that. I will see about a gpu later down the road but will be relying on iGPU for now and have decided to go for all new hardware for that reason to get the best performance for now.

(*edit- I know i'll need a gpu to passthru for the VM and that unraid is having some small issues with 12th gen atm but they seem to be issues i can deal with atm)

1. NAS for 4 person home. Most of the storage will be random stuff and video archive as we will be a multi streamer home soon (twitch/youtube) if ppl keep on the track they wish to stay on so would like to have a ok backlog of video, but nothing like LTT every single video ever.

2. Plex server (current collection is 4TB and doesnt grow fast)

3. Windows VM to use Launchbox* (Have about 600GB game collection from physical rips that I would like to be able to access using steam link/moonlight or some other way to access as a network drive maybe if not on a VM?)

4. Learning tool for Docker and other server related stuff.

Intel Core i5-12400 (+ NH-U12S)
ASUS TUF Gaming B660m-plus wifi
32GB Corsair Ven.LPX ddr4-3200
500GB 970 evo plus (cache)
1TB 970 evo plus (windows vm for launchbox)
10TB WD Red+ (Parity) x1
6TB WD Red+ (data) x3
Tamppkon 4 port Sata3 pcie card
Seasonic Focus 750w 80+Plat
Fractal Node 804

Wanting this thing to last and be able to be upgradable for a while so some pieces are a little more than maybe needed now.

If anymore info is needed lmk and I'll do my best to reply swiftly!

nothing standing out as over or under powered for a NAS with one VM.

Personally I would keep the plex library on a separate drive to the backup parity/data set to reduce the drive seeking. It's not necessary, but if you are planning on using a "cold storage" style backup (data accessed once or twice a month or year) with minimal reads after the data is written, you can reduce the potential for drive failures by keeping data being read often (plex media files) on a different drive and let that drive take all the wear and tear.

The best gaming PC is the PC you like to game on, how you like to game on it

Noted. Makes sense. As a side note then having like an external drive with the movie collection on it as the backup would be better than leaving that to the parity drive? part of the original reasoning was I really don't want to have to redo a bunch of handbrake work again lol.
