Aging Strider 550W?

LogicalDrm

Getting close to my GPU replacement, I started to wonder whether I should/would need to upgrade PSU also. The current one is SilverStone Strider 550W 80+ Gold that has been in my rig for 6+ years. Before that it was with 2 other owners so I have no clue how old it is. It has tiny coil whine, but I haven't heard is in ages, like 2 years after I started using it.

The rig will continue on 4770K for at least year (unless it dies) and new GPU will be GTX 1070/Ti, GTX 1080/Ti, RTX 2060 or maybe RX 6600. All these are currently at my preferred price/performance range on our used markets. The CPU upgrade would be to upper midrange as I do video editing occasionally, but can't say for sure what would be the best pick when the time comes...

The question being, is it fine to continue with this PSU or should I spent that extra €80-150 for newer model?

I'd say that PSU is fine for now, what is your current GPU? If it's been working with that one and none of the new GPUs are too high above its power draw, should be safe to keep using.

It was GTX 780 Founders.

Oh yeah any of those GPUs will be lower power consumption, it'll be fine for a while longer - good quality PSU. After 8 or so years I'd consider replacing it though.

What is the exact model of the PSU? There are like 8 different variants and unfortunately not all are of the same quality 😕

You mean like exact model number? That's bit harder to get. It's from 2013-2015 if that's any help.

For what it's worth with PSUs.

From the store, its been used within 32 day return period. Its not warranty repaired, I wouldn't buy that kind of things for active use.
