Samsung 970 EVO Plus vs Samsung 980 Pro

I have a 2TB 970 EVO Pro, but the 980 Pro is more expensive and is newer. Which one is better? Is the 970 EVO Plus Gen4? I think both are Gen4, but I don't know for sure.

how are you doing today

970 Evo Plus is Gen3. 980 Pro is Gen4. As such, the 980 Pro is up to twice as fast, with sequential read around 7000MB/s. It's objectively "better", but there's very few applications where you can actually benefit from those kinds of speeds. In most workloads, the difference between Gen3 and Gen4 is imperceptible.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X · Cooler: Artic Liquid Freezer II 280 · Motherboard: MSI MEG X570 Unify · RAM: G.skill Ripjaws V 2x16GB 3600MHz CL16 (2Rx8) · Graphics Card: ASUS GeForce RTX 3060 Ti TUF Gaming · Boot Drive: 500GB WD Black SN750 M.2 NVMe SSD · Game Drive: 2TB Crucial MX500 SATA SSD · PSU: Corsair White RM850x 850W 80+ Gold · Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow · Monitor: MSI Optix MAG342CQR 34” UWQHD 3440x1440 144Hz · Keyboard: Corsair K100 RGB Optical-Mechanical Gaming Keyboard (OPX Switch) · Mouse: Corsair Ironclaw RGB Wireless Gaming Mouse

Nope, but it is basically the best performing Gen 3 drive on the market. In random performance (what matters for making the drive feel snappy) it beats a lot of the cheaper Gen 4 drives out there.

They have similar random performance, but the 980 Pro has double the sequential scores, so it is technically the better drive. The problem is, unless you're regularly moving 100GB+ around you're not gonna notice the difference between the two. I would feel more than comfortable using a 970 Evo Plus as any drive in my system, it's probably still overkill for most workloads.
