Cooling advice needed for old computer

Hi.

I have very old computer and i started to have overheating problems on my GPU (hitting 87-88° degrees) i have repasted the GPU about 8 months ago.

I have very old case as well. Only have one 80mm exhaust fan mounted. Inside of case gets too hot while system is under load.

Also, my computer is currently so dusty(i have been busy because of exams), I don't know how to clean dust properly.

I know there's not much could be done for this case, but is there's a way to make this computer run much cooler? If not, i think I could afford an new entry level ATX case.

Case(no cable management):

GPU is so dusty and I don't know how to clean it properly.

Thanks in advance.

air dusters and a soft paint brush will be your best starting point. brush off all the dust you can get to then use the air to blow out dust in the coolers and brush off again. Should be pretty spotless after that.

running with the side panel off or cutting a hole in the front of the case for a 120mm fan would help, look online for free old computers or computer cases as well since sometimes you can get lucky with an old workstation case

The best gaming PC is the PC you like to game on, how you like to game on it

I can tell that board is one of those asus p5n boards looking at the heatsinks and ram, what specific board is that btw? Itll do good for oc which you need to do if you are actually intending on using it for something and judging by the gpu you are gaming on it

Full specs of the system?

What is it being used for (if its even being used)?

If you have a low multi 45nm quad or dualcore then just buying a cheapo intel stock cooler with a copper slug will do, if you do intend on oc then i can tell you that asus boards suck on 775 other than p35 and p965, my p5q only does a measly 570fsb max

Hey there,

I'd mostly use an air compressor to clean the dust, going through each heat sink fin in a well ventilated area. There's a video of Gamers Nexus just cleaning the heat sink under the tap (taken off the actual GPU board with no electrical components attached), but they did mention it could cause corrosion if not dried properly, and due to the GPU prices these days, it would be a dangerous risk, so just go with the compressed air with each fin. Due to the level of dust in your GPU, it might also be a good idea to just take the whole heat sink apart, so that you can also not just clearly clean each individual fin, but also clean the GPU board from any dust attached to any components. Removing as much dust as you can will help airflow to components and prevent a quicker dust buildup.

I use a similar old case, I just use a dust pan to clean up the dust at the bottom and then wipe it down with a wet towel. This is how I clean my case, the less dust the better.

In terms of the exhaust fan, have you tried maybe blocking the other unused exhaust fan placement?

This is just to help with air flow, so that it creates a better vacuum instead of taking the cool air from outside.

That's just how I'd do it, best to get other people's opinions as well 😄

*Heads up, I don't have an air compressor, so I just wipe down each thing with a paper towel usually XD
But definitely go with the air compressor 🙂

It is Asus ROG Commando which has P965 chipset. It has decent OC potential but my cooling doesn't allow me to do so.

I have an Xeon X5450 installed on the system. 6GB of DDR2 800MHz Kingston memory, Radeon R9 280X GPU and Gigabyte P650B PSU.

Holy sht

Though i may be able to make you a modded bios, i have tested the commando ebb on my p5q while doing some very basic bios modding and found it to be slightly worse than a maximus ii formula/crosshair IV ebb. You may find slightly better fsb oc and ram oc capabilites

Cooling wise alot of new coolers are not compatible with 775 so gotta get an old one, any old 4-6 heatpipe would work and you can get old coolers for a cheap price on the used market, even a thicc copper core 775 cooler would be alot better than whatever the hell that dinky cooler is, expect ~4.4 tops cause quads really dont like high fsb, esp over 500. Also bad rams that cant clock high = rip oc so make sure those kingston rams do ~1000mhz stable

My e8400 only does 4.45 just because cooling issues and garbage p5q even though its bios modded, yea a giga p45 would be a great upgrade over this pos

My CPU doesn't have the potential unfortunately. I have been getting constant BSODs at 3.6 GHz even with 1.51V core voltage. Maybe it's possible that my RAM is limiting factor for OC.

CPU only runs stable at stock clock with 1.38V voltage. Maybe just bad CPU.

Did you set the ram to 800mhz or is it at 1066mhz? Theres no way the cpu is so trash that it needs 1.38v for stock clocks

What stepping does your cpu have? E0 usually do ~4ghz on stock voltage and c0 i think is abit worse doing ~3.8ghz at stock voltage, could just be the bios being garbage at handling quad cores too

Or have you mis identified your cpu? Have a look at cpuz and see what it says about the cpu, also what is your bios overclock settings? For all i know quad cores need a decent amount of fsb termination aka vtt compared to dual cores

It is C0 stepping. CPU is set to running 1.36V core voltage.

For BIOS settings:

-FSB is set to 1333MHz

-RAM clock is set to "Auto". System won't boot if i set it otherwise at stock clocks for some reason.

-Others settings are set to "Auto".

It doesn't run stable at stock voltage and stock clocks for some reason.

Ok those timings look like sht, youll wanna set them to 6-6-6-18 instead since thats what most average ram does though maybe you got decent rams so also try 5-5-5-15

Ive never really seen any benifit of running the timings like that and if you wanna run high clocks just rip the settings off some world record of hwbot, atleast thats what i did with my extreem dark 1066 rams and now i can boot it at upto ~1560mhz, ofc still unstable cause i gotta tune it, timings are 7-9-5-20 132trfc with volt of 2.3v cause these rams are in 3x1 and record holder is only doing 1 stick, not to mention my board sucks but seems to handle ludicrous ram freq somehow

Uhhh are you having a stroke again ._.

well alot of new coolers dont support 775 anymore and i dont think pcpp even has 775 listed anymore, after all its nearly 2 decades old at this point

A cheap 775 copper slug cooler would prob suffice since it performs well and is pretty much dirt cheap nowadays

I'm beginner in overclocking. I have tried tuning memory timings about 2 years ago. System didn't post.

Also, i have 2 1GB CL5 sticks and 2 2GB CL6 sticks installed. Different CL values on sticks. Maybe that's the problem.

Could you take a pic of them?

You may wanna go buy some micron d9gmh or d9gkx for higher ram freq, you can find them on ebay for pretty cheap though youll need to tell the seller that you want d9gmh or d9gkx (pref d9gkx cause better bin). You can also go buy some locally though depends on how you do it, i use a local eshop so i just ask the seller and get the rams delivered

If you do get the opportunity to get high speed 1066 rams then have a look at those if you have no luck getting d9 off oem or generic sticks, just dont pay stupid amounts of money for em. I have 1x3 extreem dark 1066 6-6-6-18 dimms and doing abit of tuning with rather odd timings i got 1480 7-9-9-12 132trfc stable at 2.2v so dont be afraid to make the timings look a little odd. Though 740fsb is far more then your board will ever reach so dont bother doing stupid high ram oc cause itll be slow due to garbage timings
