Hey all!

I want to build a small capacity home server just to see if this is something worth to upgrade later or not. I have an older R7 1700x and Crosshair VI mobo to use.

I need a GPU for it to display but would I need a decent spec card if I use the server as a Media Plex server or would just a cheap gpu be fine?

I don't really know much about how the display works with servers (I never had one).

Thanks for any help peeps!

Depends. Do you plan on transcoding at all and, if so, leverage hardware transcoding?

Crystal: CPU: i7 7700K | Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix Z270F | RAM: GSkill 16 GB@3200MHz | GPU: Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti FE | Case: Corsair Crystal 570X (black) | PSU: EVGA Supernova G2 1000W | Monitor: Asus VG248QE 24"

Laptop: Dell XPS 13 9370 | CPU: i5 10510U | RAM: 16 GB

Server: CPU: i5 4690k | RAM: 16 GB | Case: Corsair Graphite 760T White | Storage: 19 TB

I don't think I would be transcoding anything. It's mainly going to be to save photos and archive my YT uploads. Would the uploads be why I might need to transcode?

If streaming to places outside your house then yes that is a factor. Another factor, also for streaming in-home, is whether the playback device supports the codecs of the material Plex is serving up. If not, it will also transcode.

Gotcha that helps a lot. I really don't plan on streaming outside my house that I could think of. I am waiting to build the server to get money for the other parts so I might even upgrade my current 1660 super to a new AMD card so I could always use the 1660 for the server should I do that.

Thanks for the insight!

Keep in mind that for hardware transcoding (i.e. GPU transcoding) you need the paid Plex Pass. Free account only offers CPU transcoding.
