Question About Studio Headphones

Hi, I need some advice.

I've been wanting a new headset for a while now and I don't know If I should go for a gaming headset, or a studio headset.

The Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO / DT 990 PRO look so comfy, how many Ohms am I going to need, do I need an AMP for that, because it mainly will be used for gaming, listening to music and chattigng with friends on discord.

I really want headsets with surround sound.

Please give me some advice, thank you! 🙂

Do you want a built-in microphone or not? That's kinda the split between a "gaming" headset or not.

Have you read through the FAQ? That will perhaps helps with some of your initial ohm/DAC/amp questions. Chance are if you aren't buying anything wild your onboard audio will be just fine.

Be sure to QUOTE or TAG me in your reply so I see it!

If DT770 or DT990 both 250ohm or higher, yes, you'll need an amp otherwise you'll waste their potentials. For chatting with friends on discord, I don't which headphone or headset will suit fine.

DAC/AMPs:

If you got the 80 ohm you would be fine with onboard audio.  If you plan on getting an amp later the 250ohm will work onboard until you do.  My personal choice for a headset is a pair of audiophile grade headphones with an antlion mod mic attached to the side of it.  I have 8 or so pairs of headphones and simply purchased a couple packs of the magnetic bases and now I can swap headphones and put my one uni mic on any of them.  The only drawback of this solution is that you can't just swing the mic up to mute, when compared to a gaming headset, and if you aren't using a wireless modmic you have an extra cable to deal with.

Surround headphones or headsets are generally regarded as a gimmick though I've never listened to a pair.

Depending on your budget you could get a pair of phillips shp9500/shp9600 with a vmoda boom mic or step up from there to some dt770/990 80 ohm and a mod mic or some phillips X2HR + mod mic.  Going with audiophile headphones greatly increases your options and will return a greater sound than a gaming headset for music video and gaming.

Audio go Brrrrrr
