PSU <$150 650w

Adam

Hey Guys

As the title says 650w Power-supply for less than $150.

I was thinking the Corsair HX650. But is that the best option or are there better ones out there.

Also 80+ certified.

I really don't have any other specific needs but it needs to be available where I am (Australia) ;)

Thanks for Suggestions. :)

I would think that in Australia there would be quite a big range of PSUs available for you to choose.

Also I don't really know about the prices in Australia but most PSUs should be at about that price range.

I currently use a CX600 from Corsair and it works a charm, the only downside is that it isn't modular. I don't know whether you're looking for a modular PSU or not but if you are the HX650 looks great and it's fairly cheap for such a well constructed modular PSU, so that's a definite option, or if you're looking to make your machine a little more 'future proof' in the sense of adding another graphics card or just generally higher class components that require more juice then maybe go for an HX750 or up, that way you're covering yourself for the future and saving yourself the cost of having to buy another PSU later on.

Im from Aus and after stuffing up my post here goes

1. Silverstone Strider 650w Full Modular Gold rated $165 http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=15_995&products_id=21572

2. OCZ Fatality 750w partially modular Bronze Rated $109 http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=15_305&products_id=15160

3. Antec True Power 650w partial modular Bronze rated $119 http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=15_226&products_id=13459

4. The Corsair HX650 which you know about

Personally spend the extra $15 on the Silverstone 650w as it is far superior to the others. It is up to you on what you decide but they are some options i thought of.

Get a power supply that has more wattage than just what you need so that you have some spare available if you want to add additional components or upgrade things later down the road the use more power

The Seasonic x650 is a great unit; same internals as the AX line up from Corsair, therefore it is fully modular and 80+ Gold. It is currently $130 on Newegg, however for Australia it is alot more, ( i think?) . http://www.myshopping.com.au/PR--368146_Seasonic_X_650_80Plus_Gold_650W

Is the $150 USD or AUD?

From what I've trawled up through various forum sites over the last few days, hours spent on souly trying to find a reliable PSU, the consensus seems to be anything that has a Seasonic board behind it.

You can check here: http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/psu_manufacturers

It's certainly the most frustrating thing, behind the case which is mainly personal preference, as i knew what price bracket i wanted to fit and what my future system would draw (wattage wise around 450W~ give or take). There didn't seem to be a concise answer, I ended up sticking to the PSU I had chosen originally, coincidentally the HX650.

My main reasons for this were the; Warranty (7 years and reputable), Reviews (overall being good, Japanese capacitors, partially modular design, good construction and made by seasonic) and overall aesthetics (as its seems to fit somewhat with the Asus P8Z77-V and Blue Vengeance :P)

My other runners up were the:

Corsair TX V2 650W: http://ncix.com/products/?sku=58381&promoid=1366 (the non modular version, as the 'M' version is not made by seasonic, instead CWT)

Antec HCG 620M : http://ncix.com/products/?sku=67325&promoid=1305 (this being partially modular and seasonic based)

I say get the Corsair AX650W i got mine on sale for around $80 i think. I love it the fan only turns on when above 30% load and its quiet, fully modular as well!

i had a little trouble finding one just now, so ill give you the brands i think are great: Corsair, Seasonic, Silverstone, antec, higher end OCZ and XFX ( these two i dont recomend as highly, they are still good though). other than that, what ever fits in you price range!!

Think I saw it mentioned earlier - http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=15_995&products_id=15349 - then if you're feeling the need you can pickup a 24 pin and a couple of PCI-E cables all individually sleeved by Silverstone from PCCG because frankly, most budget cables are pretty poorly sleeved, just look at some of Linus' un-boxings.

@Windspeed36, i don't think Adam is looking for aesthetic but just a good reliable power supply.

@SkizzFX, Thermaltake's TR2 power supplies reliability is questionable.

The HX650 V2 is indeed a good option, reliablity-wise it is far ahead of some of the units others have listed, like the ZT, CX and TR2. It doesn't seem to bad a bad deal at all for $150 either, at least looking at pccasegear.

A cheaper alternative could include the HCG620m from Antec, which isn't as good in terms of reliability, but is a pretty decent unit for $115.

I would recommend the Seasonic MI2II 620w Semi-Modular PSU if you're on a budget, but if you want a higher efficiency PSU, get the Seasonic X Series Gold 650w PSU. Not worth it for the extra efficiency in my opinion though.

i got ax850 from corsair for 220$. basically a seasonic unit inside, so silverstone , corsair, seasonic, or evga usually have good psu less than 150$. go check up some reviews on http://www.jonnyguru.com and compare. and get modular if you can, worth it !

Word of advice though, dont get cheap powersupplies. My first one in my first build was a sunbeam hush 680watt PSU and had a cream pcb inside with a heatsink and a blue led fan. weighed nothing and was cheap cheap cheap. Then recentrly i saw a review on http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=204 and he tested a sunbeam 580watt psu and it failed horribly. Get one thats heavy with decent circuitry and youll be fine.

You should go for this.

You can also check this unboxing and first look that linus made for its smaller brother : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2gYS4MkSNA

Sorry to hear that. You can choose an OCZ power supply. If you paid attention,Linus said that they are pretty good. The return rate for those power supplies are very very low.

Ok, from all the suggestions that all of you helpful people have made I have made a list. Some of the suggestions were either too expensive or weren't available locally and would be too expensive to ship.

This is a table of the remaining power supplies that made it through the (test).
