Hey LTT!

Well, a friend wants a sorta high-end gaming PC, and his budget is $1500 AUD.

Some notes, this build will be purely for gaming, current gen as well as next gen.

He REALLY likes the H440, so if we can fit it into the budget, that would be awesome :D

He also wants to OC, so a "k" series CPU and a Z87 is always welcome.

Here is the Aussie PCPartPicker -

Thanks for any insight!

I don't think it is going to happen with the H440.  Let him know that case doesn't impact performance, so there is no benefit to spending more on a nice case other than aesthetics.

If he can find a case that he likes that isn't more than $100, he will make it happen at $1500.  The alternate way of thinking about this is that a case can be reused over and over again in all future builds.  So splurging and buying a case that he really likes is more of an investment because it is reusable.

750w is for SLI / OC when he decides to do it, otherwise, you can spend a little over 1500 and get a lower wattage and get a 780

Cheaper PSU can upgrade you to 780, but it'll be 40$ over budget, and you won't be able to SLI down the road.

Also if he's not interested in OC, you could run locked processor, and upgrade to a 780

Would something like a 4570 and a H87 Board impact the Performance much? Just for gaming?

Question, does OC'ing have a major effect in gameplay, becuase as I said, this PC is purely for gaming.

@Jerakl @Phage @SAV1OUR @Luclocke

Yes, OCing does have an impact on performance, particularly in CPU intensive games, such as BF4.

You said your friend wants to overclock. So.....being overclockable would make it last longer though, because when next gen come around or it starts to slow down you can just

But what if the price difference between being able to OC and not being able to OC make the difference for him to be able to get the next tier GPU up?

GTX 780 already is the best GPU he can get.  The build I created is your best bet.  It is overclockable, as well as upgrade-ready, and he could even go SLI in a couple years if he thinks his PC is not keeping up with the times, but a single 780 will last him for many, many years.

Get him the overclock ready build, if he doesn't want to OC from day one, at least he has the option to do it down the road and it should make his PC last longer.

Don't get an R9, they run insanely hot and are very loud.  Especially if you are in Australia, I would be concerned about heat.

Here is the build you want, assuming that your friend has an old HDD that he can use.
