Two answers:

  1. Is there a suggested OS for software you might be using in your studies/line of work? Find out what that is and buy that.
  2. M1 Macbook.

Ryzen 7 7800x3D -  Asus RTX4090 TUF OC- Asrock X670E Taichi - 32GB DDR5-6000CL30 - SuperFlower 1000W - Fractal Torrent - Assassin IV - 42" LG C2 - Windows 11 Pro

Performance for what? What do you plan on doing with the computer? Programming? Running VMs? Dual booting with Linux? BCA is a broad category

I mean in general terms nothing to specific as of now....

Is macbook air a good choice in its price segment??

If you just need a computer to browse the internet and take notes, you can probably just ask on Facebook and someone will probably have an 8+ year old laptop they want to get rid of that they'd be willing to donate to a college kid. Usually, it just needs a new battery and maybe an upgrade to an SSD, and it'll work fine for college stuff.

But if you just want general buying advice, LTT did a recent video on the subject:

*** Threads merged ***

Please edit your title to represent thread content bit better. "X vs Y" is easily seen as flame-bait style thread which we don't allow. And you are specifically asking what OS/laptop for studies. Also, please only use one thread per subject of discussion.

M1 Macbook (Air) all the way then. It does the essential things so damn well, it's hard to look somewhere else. except upgrades (not possible, and they cost alot).

Quiet, long battery life and still high performance. it's great. Also, that Trackpad with macOS gestures are insanely good. Windows does support multiple Desktops, but that 3-finger-swipe on MacOS makes it actually really useable.

Also, you never need t shut it down, it's always ready.

A Joy to use, but not cheap. Even the entry model.

For pure College stuff, even 8 year old Laptops can work fine. If not with Windows, they could with Linux.

But i wouldn't take any old Laptop tbh. Focus on Business models, like Thinkpad T-series, HP Elitebook series, Dell Latitude 5000 series.

There are tons of refurbish resellers who sell them with warranty and good condition.

Most come with an SSD already and 8gb Ram, that's fine. Fokus on 1920x1080 Displays, do yourself a favor and do NOT take any Laptop with less than that.
