Hey all, sorry in advance if this has been asked. I've looked around and can't really get an answer for my exact issue

I bought my son a pc for Xmas from IBUYPOWER.  Its an asus b550f motherboard, ryzen 5 3600 with a nvidia geforce rtx 2060.

It came with 8gb of ram.   I bought 2 sticks of corsair ddr4 3600 ram, replaced the single stick with 2x16gb sticks, in slots a2 and b2.  Within minutes I got the BSOD for memory management error..  after a few tests I decided to return the ram and buy new ones.  I thought maybe it was the 3600 speed causing issues so I bought 2x16 3200 corsair and continued having the issues, but with 2 or 3 other error messages on the BSOD.

Finally I contacted IBUYPOWER and they informed me the model number on my ram wasn't supported by the MB.  Does this seem like a legit issue?  I am somewhat computer savvy but I've been out of the pc game for a while (went mac), and I always assumed ram was ram, as long as you followed the ddr4 and speed.

Thanks for the help all!!

I'm assuming you put the sticks of RAM in and didn't set XMP? If so, your motherboard would still be trying to run the settings for the 8 gig stick, which probably won't be quite enough power. 3600 and 3200 should work just fine in a B550. Since that's AMD, it's probably called DOCP in the BIOS instead of XMP. The RAM is plug and play, but it isn't if that makes sense.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

That does make sense..  I didn't look for XMP or DOCP, but you mention not enough power, I did double check that and it was running at 1.3v. Is that what you're referring too?

Yes, however, LPX at 3600mhz calls for 1.35ish V. If it will POST with both sticks of the 16Gig ram. I'd put them in the 2nd and 4th slot from the CPU, go into BIOS. Enable XMP/DOCP and let ASUS/Corsair deal with voltages and timings.

Edit: What specific kits of RAM are you trying?

Sorry to say boards have RAM compatibility issues. Check board supported hardware on their website. if you haven't, change BIOS Memory settings to suit.

I have 2 boards, 1 with 4 16GB modules running at 4GB each, an Intel Board.

Memory compatibilty IS a thing..  It's more important on some systems that others so it's worth checking if you have issues

https://rog.asus.com/uk/motherboards/rog-strix/rog-strix-b550-f-gaming-model/helpdesk_qvl_memory

I've provided a link to the Memory QVL (Qualified Vendor List) for your board.  Easiest way to find if your RAM is compatible is to hit CTRL+F and then type/copy the long part number on the back of the sticks of RAM

With all the Trolls, Try Hards, Noobs and Weirdos around here you'd think i'd find SOMEWHERE to fit in!

They're probably going off the QVL for the board, but they don't know what they're talking about. Just because a particular kit isn't on the QVL doesn't mean it's incompatible. Memory vendors have to submit the RAM to be tested by the board manufacturer and there's time and cost involved. Sometimes they don't submit at all, or they'll only submit certain kits. If it's not on the QVL, that only means that the kit was not specifically tested for that board, not that it's incompatible. Even if it is on the QVL that doesn't mean it will work. It's not tested under every possible configuration an end user might have, and RAM manufacturers very often change out the the dies and such on RAM without changing the model number or resubmitting for validation.

Long and short, the QVL is mostly meaningless, and the rep you talked to was feeding you a line of bull or doesn't know what they're talking about.
