I have here a HDD that I have had lying around for a while, its my wife's and I'n now trying to salvage some pictures out of it. Since im fairly new i assumed that i could plug in the SATA cable and power and VOILA! That's not the case. So now I am stumped.

The drive is from a Dell Inspiron 1520 that was on Vista. The laptop was bought Late Summer 2008. That's about all the info i have at the moment.

I'm on Windows 8. Let me know if you need more info. I appreciate any and ALL help.

go to Disk Management and check to see if the hdd is detected or not. If yes, proceed to format it.

Disk Management tells me that the disk is not initialized, also when i try to initialize it MBR or GPT it gives me incorrect function error. Initialize disk on the right click menu is grayed out.

can you create a new small partition on that drive?and then try to initialize it again.

@Dante0217 DO NOT format or make partitions is you want any chance of recovering data from the drive.

Once you chnage the data on the disk, that data is gone.

It should be as simple as plunging in the disk to a sata and it working unless the drive has hard ware level encryption.  set on the original bios then the disk is just a large paper weight.

in the picture the sata cable does not look to be on fully.

you should try the disk in anther pc.

i will try to load it up on another PC, i moved the cable slightly to be able to take the picture and then replaced the cable. Thanks for the heads up on the formatting though, I'm sure death from my wife would have been painful had those pictures been deleted
