I think my title pretty much covers every base I'm basically looking for a beastly but compact machine. 3D modelling (Solidworks) will be it's main use with video/photo editing something I am starting to explore. I would rather spend now on the main parts so they survive the future.

I don't have any large storage in this machine as this will mainly be stored on a NAS which I want to build as I want everybody in the house to use it, unless there is a better way.

I will probably use a scratch disc like a Raptor or something whilst I'm working on the files then putting them on that NAS once done. Don't really have budget for this machine as I will build it over time buying bits each month. My specs so far:

CPU:  Intel 4930K 3.40GHz Socket: 2011

Motherboard:  Asus Rampage IV Gene Intel X79 Socket: 2011 Micro ATX

RAM:  Corsair Vengeance Red 32GB (4x8GB) DDR3 1866MHz Quad Channel

CPU Cooler:  Corsair Hydro H90 140mm Liquid CPU Cooler

Storage:  Samsung EVO 250GB SSD x2 Raid 0 for OS/Programs

Power Supply:  Corsair RM Series 450 Watt ’80 Plus Gold’ Power Supply

Case:  Bitfenix Phenom Micro-ATX

Graphics Card:  Will probably have a AMD FirePro as this works best for me in Solidworks and then will probably add a Nvidia Quadro 2000 1GB to get the colour depth as I'm not sure if the FirePro can do it.

I will get at some point a proper deep colour monitor like the Asus ProArt but that is a few £££.

Im pretty new to PC building and thought this is the best way to get any ideas on my idea for a rig.

Cheers

What kind of projects are you working on?

Why so much ram?

Please tell me you're not talking about a velociraptor..

I will be mainly be doing Solid 3D work and then in future probably DLSR video and pics - Pics mainly by me but video will be someone else in my house.

From my experience and my work pc when rendering in Solidworks the more RAM the faster render and can help with large assemblies.

I was talking about a Velocipartor but judging by your response this doesn't seem a good idea?? I just wanted a fast performance reasonable high capacity drive.

Thanks, still getting used to forums :)

What kind of systems are you working with? There's a point where getting more ram becomes useless due to diminishing returns. Also, others factors may come into play if ram isn't the only difference in the systems you have used.

Velociraptors are very loud and not that good for the money. I wouldn't use one if it was free. If you need a fast drive to render to, use a hdd raid, ssd, or ssd raid. As for mass storage, there's little need for a particularly fast drive.

Sorry been away for bit :) In my mind the main points in system that are going to affect me are Storage, Ram and processor.

I'm at maximum I really want to go with storage with a single SSD or 2 in raid 0 without spending lots of money. I uses a HDD now and is way to slow for me when opening an closing models

Same with processor I have gone as high as I can go (I think) without getting very expensive.

I take your point with RAM and depending on the size of the stuff I'm working on varies the RAM usage so 16gb would probably be ok. But for me I would just like to have a bit more just in case, as you never know the jobs which come along.

Cool, Raptor sounded like something different but if not good value and noisy I would rather something better!!

It would help to know the specs of the systems you're currently working with as a reference point.
