How to upgrade Bluetooth Codec/Quality

I'm wondering if there is a way to upgrade the connection quality or codec that's used for airpods? They currently establish connection quality and auto pick when they first connect but they are stuck in dogshit mode but only on my macbook and not iphone. Any ideas to make it swap or an option like the 1000XM4s have? Thanks

What macbook and OS version? Given Apple stuff you typically wouldn't have a choice and it would always give the best, but that might require a mac newer than X for BT version and running MacOS newer than Y for codec support...

Well you see it's an intermittent issue. It worked fine for a month or two then sometimes I would hear it's mono with shit quality and usually a system restart or disconnecting and then connecting the airpods would fix it. But now it's not swapping back

If it switches to mono it might be that some app is using the microphone, find and disable that
