Looking to setup a NAS to backup files too but also stream media from

will0hlep

Hi all,

I'm presently thinking about building my own NAS. I would like to use it to both regularly backup a couple of Windows PCs and also stream media (like films I've ripped from their discs, these files would ideally not need transferring to the server manually and would instead be copied over to the server as part of the regular backup) to other devices in my household (other Windows PCs, a few IPhones and 1 Mac) over the local network.

Can anyone recommend an OS (or any other setup details) that would suit this use case?

Thanks in advance

Common build advice: 1) Buy the cheapest (well reviewed) motherboard that has the features you need. Paying more typically only gets you features you won’t use. 2) only get as much RAM as you need, getting more won’t (typically) make your PC faster. 3) While I recommend getting an NVMe drive, you don’t need to splurge for an expensive drive with DRam cache, DRamless drives are fine for gamers. 4) paying for looks is fine, just don’t break the bank. 5) Tower coolers are usually good enough, unless you go top tier Intel or plan on OCing. 6) OCing is a dead meme, you probably shouldn’t bother. 7) "Bottlenecks" rarely matter and "Future-proofing" is a myth. 8) AIOs don't noticably improve performance past 240mm.

Sounds like you want a Plex server. You can use any server based OS (or even Windows for that matter) to get this to run, but either UnRAID or TrueNAS will be the easiest to setup.

As for automatically transferring the files over, it probably could be done, but it would almost certainly be easier to just manually do it yourself.

Okay, thanks

I'm now looking at components but I'm not too sure exactly what sort of stuff I need. My guess is:
I need a small SSD to host the OS on (256 or 512 GB);
I saw some advice on a guide from 2013 saying you want a GB of ram for every TB of storage;
It sounds like I only need a cheap GPU (lol, feels strange typing cheap GPU at the moment) for the encoding workload of running plex if I go cheap on the CPU, otherwise CPU only should be fine;
I've seen suggestions that ECC ram is a good idea but I haven't yet looked into performance penalties or the extra cost, is it likely to be worth it?

I also have little to no idea how to choose a good RAID controller but I am aware that this is an expensive component and I may also choose to go software RAID instead, for the moment if I could get advice on how to choose a RAID controller that would be great (I'll make a decision on hardware vs software RAID later).

Everything else (PSU and Motherboard) just appears to be choose it based on the choices made above.

Anyone got any advice for me?
