System Powered Itself Off

Go to solution Solved by CoronaBlue,

Another update (sorry again): It just turned itself off again. However, this time when I try to turn it on it won't boot. Instead, all the fans turn up to maximum. I've tried rebooting twice now, but with the same result.

To me, this is pretty much my PSU saying, "Hey, I'm broken." I'm going to order a new one ASAP. What steps do I need to take to ensure that my other components weren't damaged.

So I need to add to the list of strange PC problems I've been having lately. About a week ago my computer began to freeze up for no apparent reason. Thanks to the great folks on this forum, I'm no longer experiencing that issue. Full details can be found here http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/136602-multiple-freezes-with-no-obvious-cause/#entry1815338.

Now, however, something else is wrong (or maybe it is the same issue). Last night my screen started randomly going black, both in game and out. I monitor my GPU with Afterburner, and the temperature never even approached 60C. I installed an Nvidia driver update, updated Windows, shut the system down, and went to sleep. This morning I began to play the same game (XCOM: Enemy Within) again to try and reproduce the issue. Nothing, and the GPU was still nice and cool. Then my computer turned itself off. It was not a shut down, or anything like that. My television told me that it had lost the input signal, and when I looked at my PC the power light was off.

OS: Windows 7 64 bit.

Specs:

CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-L9i
Motherboard: MSI Z87-G43 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB 2.5" Solid State Disk
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 770 2GB Video Card
Case: Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: Corsair CX 600W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply
Optical Drive: LG UH12NS30 Blu-Ray Reader, DVD/CD Writer

BIOS Version: American Megatrends Inc. V1.3, 6/6/2013

No error messages, and the computer does not beep at me during start up.

Please let me know if you need any more information.

Thanks so much.

I was playing XCOM. I don't ever have any issues with CPU temps, even during Unigine Valley (which pushes my system much harder than XCOM).

I'm not sure if a cable could have come out. I just opened it up and checked the connections last week. I haven't moved it since then. Also, it came right back on, and has remained on since I posted the topic.

hey first thing come to mind is overheated cpu, but it could also mean faulty psu.

what was you doing when the pc turned off?

I apologize for the double post, but I have an update.

I left the system on while I was at work. It was still on when I came home, and did not appear to have restarted itself. In order to rule out a CPU problem, I just played through the same section of game as before, leaving RealTempGT running in the background. My cores only got to around 60C.

Given the other issues I've had, I find it hard to believe that this is all just a coincidence. What is the next step?

I really appreciate all of the help. This issue has had me out of sorts all day.

At this point it's either a faulty PSU or a faulty motherboard. If it is possible get another psu (consider it your backup or future 2nd pc psu). And use it for a week. See if any probs crop up.

Yeah, I was already looking into that at work.

If it makes any difference, I just got a black screen again, followed by the obligatory "Nvidia Windows Kernal Mode Driver Stopped Responding and Has Recovered." I'm not sure it means much though. I just updated to 335.23 and apparently there are a lot of problems with it.

You installed the beta 337.50 driver didn't you? re install it and choose clean install or go back to the last WHQL driver.

60'c is a little hot but that shouldnt shut it down, like someone said your next bet is properly a faulty psu

Nah. I have "include beta drivers" unchecked in the GeForce Experience. It's 335.23. Looking around online, I've just seen that a lot of people are having issues with it.

I blame it on the fact that my cooler seems to be more suited towards a low profile, and less towards cooling (a bad purchasing decision on my part).

So my question, before I run out and buy a new PSU, is does it explain all of the issues I've been having?

Thanks so much for the assistance.
