Hi All,

I've been considering a new build for a while, or at the very least purchasing a custom built system from the likes of 3XS Systems here in the UK. My dilemma is that there currently seems to be a lot of turmoil in the CPU and GPU component spaces, particularly now that the new M1 Pro and M1 Max SoC's offer such a massive performance jump over current gen platforms and the rumours that Apple may be opting for a dual or quad-SoC offering in the new Mac Pro's. With this is mind, is it worth waiting until this apparent performance jump stabilises before considering an new build?

CURRENT - Dell XPS 15 9550

DECEASED - CPU - Core i7 870 @ 2.93GHz || Motherboard - MSI 7613 Ver. 1.0 || RAM - 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance @ 1333MHz || Graphics card - MSI GT 220 || Storage - 1x240GB SanDisk SSD Plus (Windows 7 SP1), 1x 960GB SanDisk Ultra II (Premiere/After Effects Projects, 1x 640GB WD Caviar Blue (Data Drive), 2x 4TB Seagate External USB 3.0 HDD

M1 (and ARM desktops as a whole tbh...) is currently exclusive to tightly integrated ecosystems, so doesnt really apply to a custom build.

as for x86 desktop: it's a very good time to buy a cpu, because intel and AMD are leap frogging again (which turns into innovation and low prices)

as for the rest...

- if you buy AMD, DDR4 prices are OK

- if you buy intel, DDR5 prices are still pretty saucy...

and buying GPU's is still horrid...

M1 SOC's are not magic and if they are really better than current x86 processors depends HEAVILY on the taks you need to do. In gaming they're still garbage and that won't change because Apple doesn't care about that market segment. And like @SorryClaire said, without knowing what you intend to do with your PC it's impossible to give good recommendations.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

I would wait until January when AMD drops their new CPUs

Thank for the responses so far, but as has been mentioned, I should have used the template.

So, requirements as follows;

Budget - upto £3000

Usage - Videographer/Editor - currently operating a variety of cameras including Sony FX6/FX9/A7sIII, BMPCC6KPro, etc.

Country - UK

CURRENT - Dell XPS 15 9550

DECEASED - CPU - Core i7 870 @ 2.93GHz || Motherboard - MSI 7613 Ver. 1.0 || RAM - 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance @ 1333MHz || Graphics card - MSI GT 220 || Storage - 1x240GB SanDisk SSD Plus (Windows 7 SP1), 1x 960GB SanDisk Ultra II (Premiere/After Effects Projects, 1x 640GB WD Caviar Blue (Data Drive), 2x 4TB Seagate External USB 3.0 HDD

What software are you using?

You might want to check their GPU prices. Could be that they're selling them for a better price. And if you check for prices from other retailers in the UK, make sure you can actually purchase them - often they list an awesome price, but you can't even buy them... That was the reason I ordered a custom build, GPU was like 300CHF cheaper than listed and actually available. And retail price increased 900CHF more - and sold out at the moment.

Waiting for better GPU prices: Maybe you'll wait forever. Lots of people are waiting, and as long as there's a higher demand than supply,... Meanwhile you could use your old GPU, get a cheaper one to use for next year or even the year after.

Intel's CPU that they dropped at the beginning of the month are awesome but not really pricey imho. Mainboards and DDR5 are still awfully expensive. I expect the prices to drop, but it's not like you'd save 300£ in February, more like 50-100£ for 'mid range' components would be my guess. Meanwhile, a DDR4 system would be more reasonably priced imho. In the end it depends on how much it impacts your work. For gamers, the formular is basically fps per £ you get...
