2080 weird temp readings and fan performance

Dam_On

Hi

I have been experiencing some weird behavior with my graphics card.

When I start a game my GPU temp shoots from idle temp of 50*c to 78*c in less than a second before the menu screen has even loaded for the game and then sits at 77-79. As soon as you close the application the gpu temp drops to 50 within fractions of a second.

I have only noticed this as my gpu fans had started running at 100%.

If anyone has any ideas please let me know, or let me know im crazy

cheers for giving this a read

50c at idle? 100% fan speed?

Poor airflow in case? Dried thermalpaste?

Please tell what case you have and what fan configuration you're running - also if intake is filtered.

At idle, if you remove the side panel, does GPU temps drop?

Hey cheers for the response mate

Sorry the fans will only run at 100% when the temp is reading 78c.

My case is a, cooler master masterbox lite 5 mid tower case, with 2 inlet fans at the front and 1 exhaust at the rear.

Is it normal for such fast temperature changes?

Fans going 100% from 78c and up sounds like a normal fan curve to me but 78c sounds too high IMO.

Also I read alot about the MasterBox Lite 5 having really bad airflow. You're probably suffocating your graphics card. Did you try taking off the case side panel and see if temps will drop? If my theory is correct, even your idle temps should begin to drop (from the 50c) when taking off the side panel.

And yes - temps rising fast is "normal" if the heat can't be dissipated.

The airflow is appearently really, really bad. Taking off the front panel should help a lot!

Please, try take of the side and/or front panel and do a normal gaming session while monitoring your temps. You probably will see an improve, both in temps and GPU fan speeds.

Eh, these temp jumps are completely normal...

For example my gpu "jumps" from 30c idle to ~55c "as soon as I start a game"...  the only diff is that yours by default runs hotter -- which is still quite normal.

What happens is you "suddenly" pump more voltage into a small electrical part, which results in heat.

As long the gpu doesn't go above 80, 85c this is completely normal (and im frankly surprised someone would be surprised by that, gpus come with a fan(s) for a reason)

Which would indeed explain the overall high'ish temps ...

I also think 2000 series overall didn't have the greatest cooling?

ok neverminded it was short lived. system was running great 29-31 idle and in game sitting at 55, restarted pc and now idle is still 30 and in game is back to 74-76, covers still off

But maybe your GPU is clocking higher than before now, which would also indicate that the cooling is much better.
