I have a .stl file I want to use for making a model. Its mosty composed of flat sides, so I figured the best way to to do this would be to map them all to a 2d plane and print that. 

But how would I do that? this might be a weird thing to do, so there might be a better way to do it, idk, but this is the best way I can think of.

I could use some help with this!

I use Autodesk meshmixer to edit STL files, it's a little unintuitive at first but once you understand the tools, it's pretty straightforward.

 

If I recall, Microsoft 3D builder also lets you edit STL files.

 

Basically you should save as many copies of the file as you would like pieces, and just cut away every part of the model you need to remove for that piece to be by itself.
