I have been looking at reviews of many headsets.  I want one that will be good for CS:GO.  I use some junk plantronics headset now and it really does blow.  I am not worried about listening to music as I have dedicated headphones from bowers and wilkins for audio.

Thanks!

Oh, 7.1 is an interest to me if it actually works.  I wish Linus had a review up about the Razor 7.1 set.

CS:GO sound is messed up already, I wouldn't risk it with 7.1.

The G930's sound is OK but they suffer in 2.0.  You don't really need surround headphones, just use 2.0 or headphone mode in game.  CS:GO is one of the titles that has a dedicated Headphone option.  Your brain will do all that mixing for you.

Plus I got annoyed with scrambling to attach the power cable from the USB hub when I was mid firefight/raid.  Another issue is that occasionally the USB receiver that plugs into the hub would not be detected as a USB device and it would cycle and repeat the dection and removal of this "mystery USB device" until a reboot or three later.  This happened on my laptop too.

The mic is pretty solid in both construction and quality and pivots away out of eyesight nicely.

The headband is uncomfortable after a couple of hours though, I found the band would grip too tightly on the top of my head and end up causing some pain on my crown, and the earpads, while soft, are clamped hard to the side of your head - something I found would heat up and make my ears gross.  I don't have a large head, I usually am able to wear headphones on or near the smallest configuration.

The benefits - not turning off your music to go to the bathroom/kitchen (providing the signal is strong enough).  Make sure to mute yourself first or else you party will hear you poop.

I downgraded (???) to the Sibera v2's and found them to be better than the 2.0 mode on the G930s and I didn't miss the 7.1 function at all.  It's all hype.

For $200 you could spend around $170 on some fairly decent headphones and then get the V-Moda Boom Pro for $30.  There are also some decent clip-on mics.  If you're lucky you might be able to find some AKG K702s' for that price and they are known to have an excellent soundstage.  I know the Q701's are more in the price range and have Quincy Jones' name attached, but I don't know if they are actually any good.

beyerdynamic custom one pro. DONE

but you do need to buy a mic for it...

Hahaha, no. Not even started.

Audio Technica AD700X and Sennheiser HD 558 will be perform great in gaming if you set your audio to "headphones" or "binaural." Get an Antlion ModMic to stick on the headphones.

Surround sound headsets are a waste of money. You're paying for gimmicky psychoacoustics that can be reproduced just as well by higher quality headphones for less money. You're not even really getting surround sound most of the time, just virtual surround sound, which isn't that great.

Which ones? The M50s? Also get a DAC.

Unnecessary.

I'm surprised he doesn't given all the cheesy, commodity audio products he's reviewed so far.

Get a DAC? An external DAC? Here, I thought this way of thinking went out of style with the Flintstones. Not every single onboard audio solution is shit.

lol if he already has some good headphones, he should use the money for a DAC, most onboard solutions are shit, and the sound really comes alive with a DAC.

Most onboard solutions sound perfectly fine. You just have to plug the headphones into the back of the system, not in the front IO.

And if the onboard solution is bad, it usually isn't because the DAC in it is bad. Most DACs these days perform about the same.

Stock coolers - The sound of bare minimum

I have ATH-ANC9 headphones from audio technica.  I also have a ROG mobo so the onboard sounds is pretty good.

You should try open back headphones, if you got the chance. Open backs are very good for 3d positional audio, and sound a lot more realistic. For example: when you run outside/in the field, the sound doesn't feel like you're running in a closed room.

When you make the first switch (from closed backs to open backs), you'll feel lack of thumping bass. It's just the characteristic of open backs (no thumping bass). Just tweak the EQ on your sound card, push the low frequencies up, and you'll be fine.
