Charging and video output for laptop

Hi,

I have a question about cable managment with laptop or sort of. I know it's possible to charge and have video output with one cable in same time. That's amazing, but what I need for it? Is enough usb-c 3.1 with 5Gbps or I need 3.2 with 10Gbps or even thunderbolt? And if I will have right laptop, what monitor I need? Also with thunderbolt, with hub or something else special? If someone can give me any advise, that will be great.

You'd need a laptop that accept USB-C Power Delivery and charging over its USB-C port then a hub that will supply that power and give you video outputs. There are.. many ways to get all this done and lots of products and can be a little confusing and overwhelming compatibility wise initially.

This can be done via just USB-C if it supports these functions such as DisplayPort Alt-mod or more expensively via Thunderbolt.

I have an older Dell XPS 13 laptop with a single Thunderbolt 3 port (USB-TypeC) and because I didn't need it, I didn't opt to go with a Thunderbolt dock. I'm using this Anker dock that charges my laptop and provides inputs and DisplayPort output. This particular model is one of the better full featured docks that isn't Thunderbolt.

First things first is find the laptop you want then determine what capability its USB-C port has.

Or you can use something like this: https://us.targus.com/products/usb-c-universal-dv4k-docking-station-with-power-dock180usz which doesn't require Thunderbolt if I recall correctly. The Targus dock I'm using is USB A based but you can purchase a Multiplexer adapter to combine the USB A and AC power into one USB-C connector.
