Computer booting in safe mode only

Apparently i can boot into the os if i go into recovery mode and boot from there. Strange....

Hello, I have an old dell optiplex 780 and I am trying to install linux on it. I cannot boot into ubuntu or lubuntu. Upon booting, I see the loading screen, however; before I see the desktop, the computer reboots. I can do this numerous times and will never reach the desktop. I can boot into the installer only if i use safe graphics. Should i try a distro with no video output? 

EDIT:
CPU is a core2 duo e8500
