Bought the SN850 1Tb at CAD$229 couple days ago.

Rest of build is 5600X/B550 Mobo/RTX 3060.   I have normal office workloads, semi-hardcore gaming, and occasionally Lightroom photo editing.

My friend keeps pushing me towards the SN850 cuz I am building a new Gen 4 rig, and no reason not to choose the latest standard.

I know the difference between Gen 3 and Gen 4 NVME is very hard to tell in gaming loading times etc.    Is it noticeable in outside of gaming?

Is it an overkill?  The part of me that wants to use the SN850 is more future-proof?

I know direct storage is 3.0 compatible too, but assuming it works i would assume Gen 4 speeds will make a difference in gaming?

Coming from someone with a 980 Pro, I can barely notice the difference between this and my Intel Skull Canyon SATA drive. I got it because "Lol why not, I already spent over 2.5k on the rest of the system, what's another $50?"

Yes

I mean technically yes? But again, decent SATA drives are still fine these days, so it will probably take years to actually notice the difference.

We won't know until a game actually uses Direct Storage, but that'll probably be at least a year, and by the time Gen4 will probably make a difference in the games that support it you'll be due for a system upgrade anyway and Gen4 drives will come down in price by then.

EDIT: Didn't see that you already bought it. I wouldn't bother returning it, just know that it's kinda like buying a race car for the streets, you can't use it (legally) anyway so what's the point besides bragging rights and burnouts (in this case, benchmarks)?
