YouTube update 16.37.36

Go to solution Solved by Speedydead,

I have huawai y9 prime. I have always been able to watch 1080p. And after his update I am no longer able to go above 720p. YouTube has locked me out. I am wondering if this is just me or someone else is having the same issue.

I did some digging and found that they added a new video compression and say it won't work on old devices. But this is horse shit cause I can view 1080p+ content on Web browsers.

If anyone else is have the same issue do tell.

Update :the problem is fixed now on its own

I think this issue is probably to do with Widevine instead, my Huawei Honor 9 Lite has Widevine Level 3, which basically means most services will only run in SD.

Widevine Level 2 supports up to 720p, can you download Device Info HW from the Play Store and see what Widevine level it reports. (nvm not Widevine related)

I'm on YouTube version 16.38.37 and it's fine, can you go into Settings > Display > Screen resolution and check Smart resolution is not on.

My specs:

Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-54)

Intel Core i5-9300H

1TB HDD (WDC WD10SPZX-21Z10T0) + 128GB M.2 SSD (KINGSTON RBUSNS8154P3128GJ1)

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 (3GB VRAM / 16GB shared) + Intel UHD Graphics 630 (16GB shared)

32GB Crucial CL19 DDR4 (SDRAM) 2667MHz (downclocked from 3200MHz)

1080p 60Hz 15.6in display overclocked to 75Hz

Windows 11 22H2

Old desktop computer

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+

2GB DDR2

NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 (825MB shared (planning on getting a GT 710 to replace this)

500GB HDD

Windows 7 Professional SP1

Lenovo Ideapad 310-15IKB 80TV (broken hinge)

Intel Core i5-7200U

1TB HDD

Intel HD Graphics 630 (2GB shared)

8GB DDR4 2133MHz

768p 60Hz 15.6in display

Linux Mint 20

My resolution is 1080p I have had this phone for about 1.5 years and have never had this issue until this update. If use browser for YouTube I can easily go more than my screen resolution upto 2160

Widevine has nothing to do with youtube, youtube does not enforce widevine on regular youtube videos. My Mi A3 has Level3 and I am able to watch 4K videos on it.
