First DIY NAS Build

elykdeam

Hey,

Just looking for some of guidance on a first DIY NAS build from someone smarter than me.

Currently running multiple 2 bay WD enclosures. I wanted to get a 4 bay, and combined them but a decent 4 bay seems pretty expensive for what you get so decided to build my own. which looks like it will be super and give me more flexibility.

Just looking to see if what i put together on PC part picker will work, or wont, or completely wrong. Sorry i bet you guys get this alot. (wont need to do any encoding)

Thanks

Id probably go with a i3 + a h510 board. Should be simmilar priced, and a bit faster.

What os are you using?

Id get a single stick of ram so you cna upgrade ram later on.

For a NAS you can get away with a lower end CPU and motherboard. Heck, even an old Core 2 Duo system can saturate a gigabit connection with mechanical hard drives.

Phobos: AMD Ryzen 7 2700, 16GB 3000MHz DDR4, ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 8GB Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070, 2GB Nvidia GeForce GT 1030, 1TB Samsung SSD 980, 450W Corsair CXM, Corsair Carbide 175R, Windows 10 Pro

Polaris: Intel Xeon E5-2697 v2, 32GB 1600MHz DDR3, ASRock X79 Extreme6, 12GB Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080, 6GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, 1TB Crucial MX500, 750W Corsair RM750, Antec SX635, Windows 10 Pro

Pluto: Intel Core i7-2600, 32GB 1600MHz DDR3, ASUS P8Z68-V, 4GB XFX AMD Radeon RX 570, 8GB ASUS AMD Radeon RX 570, 1TB Samsung 860 EVO, 3TB Seagate BarraCuda, 750W EVGA BQ, Fractal Design Focus G, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

York (NAS): Intel Core i5-2400, 16GB 1600MHz DDR3, HP Compaq OEM, 240GB Kingston V300 (boot), 3x2TB Seagate BarraCuda, 320W HP PSU, HP Compaq 6200 Pro, TrueNAS CORE (12.0)

Get the cheapest motherboard you can buy, go with a $40-50, not worth it spending $100+.

For AMD a A320 mobo paired with athlon 200/240ge is good enough.

4000/5000 series celeron also a good popular choice in NAS community.

Mini ITX is more expensive, mAtx is perfect for the budget.

120gb SSD is enough, you don't need that much for running a NAS, the os only needs like 20gb max.

Ryzen 5700g @ 4.4ghz all cores | Asrock B550M Steel Legend | 3060 | 2x 16gb Micron E 2666 @ 4200mhz cl16 | 500gb WD SN750 | 12 TB HDD | Deepcool Gammax 400 w/ 2 delta 4000rpm push pull | Antec Neo Eco Zen 500w

Lowest cpu I can find on part picker is the 3000G(Integrated graphics). Changed the case to get a cheaper board. Should mention prices are in Canadian rupees.

was going to run true nas/free NAS.

Sounds like that build is a little overkill.

Hey thanks for the feedback,

Guess I over built it.

Looks case won't allow mAtx. Wondering why the boards were so much. Looks like I can get the bigger node case, and then a mAtx board it actually ends up cheaper.

Can't find any new CPUs with integrated graphics for less than that 3000G.

Find it in the used market.
