Read something about flashing Asus R9 290 with the bios of an Asus R9 290X for more performance.

Anyone experience with this?

I now have the basic, stock AMD cooler on it, but might upgrade it to a Kraken G10 and waterblock

Unless your card was in the first batch of Asus 290/290X's that came out then there's no way of flashing it to a 290X as they changed the chip of the 290's I think.

The card is 5 months old, so might be from the first batch.

Any ideas on how to check this?

No

The R9 290 does come with two bios profiles, so I'd just flash it to an R9 290X and see if it works, if it doesn't you can just simply switch back.

No dude, that switch is for the stock cooler's fan speed.

OP, do not try to flash it if it's not compatible overwise the card will end up being useless. I've looked into doing this earlier this year but my cards aren't compatible for the flash.

It's worth a try.

If it goes wrong flip to integrated or blindflash.

Techpowerup has a load of VBIOS. Ensure you get one for Reference card.

They're one and the same. The two different fan profiles exist on two different BIOS profiles.
