Updating windows using the Win10 Install media via USB?

Harry Voyager

Spouse has a laptop with a 64Gb eMMC drive on it. She uses it to browse Facebook so it's been more than fine for her needs. However, the drive is to small to update Windows.

I'm currently wondering if it is possible to use the Windows 10 installation media to update her OS to the current Windows 10 build?

You mean running setup from the USB on a Windows 10 system from within Windows 10 that is already running?

That may or may not work. Depends on the version of Windows 10. You will probably get a message saying you cannot install or update Windows.

All you can do is try. If not, you might have to do a clean install.

Another option would be to clone Windows to a bigger drive and then apply Windows update.

64GB should be big enough. It sounds like you just need to clean up some files.

You can use the installation media to install the latest build, but not update to my knowledge. So you would end up with a clean fresh install of Windows. If you've never fresh installed Windows on the laptop, that might be a good idea anyway to get rid of the bloatware that tends to come with laptops.
