Friend asked me to build a computer his brother with 2x4TB hard drives $1200-$1500

xyza

I'm not totally sure if he games often or at all but I'm sure that he downloads lots of *stuff* so he probably has a lot of data to put on the computer already. He specifically says he wants an Intel + Nvidia and a 550w PSU.

TBH I want to get a 1440p screen but that seems to be out of the budget. He is really sacrificing a lot for those two 4TB hard drives.

This is what I have so far

2 x Hitachi Deskstar 4TB 7200RPM 0S03358 - $245.00ea
1 x Microsoft Wireless Desktop 800 - $25.00ea
1 x Silverstone TS06 External USB Slim Optical Enclosure - $29.00ea
1 x Palit GeForce GTX 750 StormX OC 1GB- $135.00ea
1 x ASUS B85M-E Motherboard - $99.00ea
1 x Silverstone Strider 550W Gold ST55F-G - $129.00ea
1 x Microsoft Windows 8.1 64bit OEM - $115.00ea
1 x BenQ GL2760H 27in Widescreen LED Monitor - $285.00ea
1 x G.Skill Sniper F3-14900CL9D-8GBSR 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 - $99.00ea
1 x Logitech Z130 2.0 Speakers - $29.00ea
1 x Intel Core i3 4130 - $135.00ea

edit; I would probably prefer to go AMD CPU but idk if he would agree with it lol

All prices are in AUS from PCCG and MSY for cheaper prices

Tell him to get a 1tb drive then just get a NAS or something for storage. It's also more safe that way

I don't think he even knows what a NAS is but I could tell him about it, he just gave me a list of stuff to get and didn't say much lol

mmm nas is definitely the better option tell him about it because your spending about %50 on the storage

I would recomend a stronger GPU, 750ti or a 760 when prices drop for maxwell

is it recommended to build your own and use freenas or openfiler if that is the same thing or just buy a pre built one and buy two hard drives for it?

and how would a NAS make this any cheaper or more reliable?

whatevers cheaper, nas builds can be rather cheap and have expand ability while the pre built have the convince of already being done

if he were to get a separate smaller budget for a nas would be possible around $300ish could get him something and then invest more into the actual build

Try this: http://www.pccasegear.com/sc/Bua

Changed the drives to Seagate Barracuda 4TB, that saved $90. Changed PSU to a Corsair VS550 to save another $35, which meant I could change the board to a Gigabyte GA-Z87M-D3H and the CPU to an i7-4670k for a total price of $1463.

Also noticed you haven't put a case in there. I'd tell them to get their own peripherals, and go for something like a Birfenix Phenom M or Prodigy M.

Noticed you removed the SSD, I'm only going for this SSD because i have the 256GB version but i could go for a cheaper 64GB one but I'm not sure which one to go for. the SSD will only be a boot drive anyway.

I could probably save a bit more and get a h87 or even b85 i'm not sure if he would notice that much of a difference anyway

I'm saying to use a NAS to store things that he needs, like 4 1TB drives are generally cheaper, allowing him to get a better more powerful PC. And keeping his data safe as in if his pc were to fall of his desk, or get knocked over

Dollar per terabyte 1TB drives are typically more expensive than 4, 3, and 2.

Wait, what does he need 16TB of storage for? A 2-bay or 4-bay NAS is his best choice, he could still put all the drives he wants in there. That 750 is going to kill his 1080p gaming ambitions. Step it up to a 750 Ti just for respectability.

Capstone 550W or G Series 550W can be found for about 30-40$ less and probably with better perf. Seasonic and Super Flower FTW.

Oops, must have clicked the wrong button. The 840 EVO is a good choice, and saves a few more dollars.

I thought the EVO doesn't support trim, if it does I would go for it though.
