Upgrade of CPU

Go to solution Solved by whispous,

You can certainly try, but this is a mobile CPU - in this case, it looks to be in a socket (so somewhat "easy" to swap out) but the motherboard in the laptop simply may not be compatibile with the processor even if it fits - and there will not be any software updates available to make it work.

Because it's a laptop, it's going to be an order of magnitude more fiddly to take apart the case then motherboard then heatpipes than with a desktop.

Proceed with an expectation of failure, and don't expect a particularly giant improvement to the performance of this decade old machine...

Hi

So I have a acer aspire 4738z

It got

Intel pentium p6100

2gb ddr3 1066mhz ram

500GB HDD

I wanna upgrade it to

Intel Core i5 480m

6gb ddr3 (speed is different it works )

128gb ssd + 500GB (caddy)

I only  got a question about the cpu will it work?

I have seen people upgrade it to a i5 460m so will it work on 480m?

Unless you're getting it dirt cheap, or really need older hardware for some reason, it would probably be more sensible to upgrade to a modern platform

Ok but there are a lot of people who has done it so....

Go for it. It will be fiddly and difficult to do, might not work and won't make a giant difference if you succeed - we're not the boss of you!
