I'm looking to buy a laptop for everyday use and some light gaming and these are the best I've found for my budget:

ASUS X550VB-XX045D       (i5-3230M; 4 GB RAM;  1 TB HDD; GT 740M)

Aspire V5-552G-10578G50aii       (A10-5757M; 8 GB RAM; 500 GB HDD; HD 8750M)

Which one do you think is better?

Also, how do they compare to my current desktop (AMD Pheno II X3 710; 4 GB RAM; 320 GB HDD; 9600 GT)?

Would I be able to play the same games I used to play on my desktop?

The i5 is the stronger processor, but the AMD has more RAM which could be of benefit for gaming (light or heavy) also since the AMD is an APU the discrete performance would be ideal for light gaming. Both are equally good laptops, but if I was to chose one then the APU would probably be chosen, but its your choice.

Well, I don't think it's worth upgrading my desktop. I'm moving away and I need mobility for now. I'm going to buy a brand new gaming rig once I get on my feet. Besides, my family needs a PC too :D

Sell your family, buy laptop AND new rig.

From my experience AMD in laptops its bad, they overheat and have worse battery life than intel+nvidia. Also in most laptops you can upgrade the ram.

Main PC:

ASUS F1A55-M LX, AMD A6-3500, (2x2)gb Kingston HyperX Blu DDR3 1600mhz, Seagate Barracuda 500gb 7200rpm,
Corsair CX430M, Cooler Master Elite 343, Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit

Netbook:

Lenovo Ideapad S10-2, Intel Atom N280, (1x1)gb DDR2 667mhz, WD Scorpio Blue 250gb 5400rpm, Zorin OS 9 Lite
