Should i drill holes under my acer nitro 5? Model AN515-45

Buhidma

Hello.

recently i bought acer nitro 5 laptop (model AN515-45)

first few days of gaming the temperatures were good i guess. less than 40c on idle and 65c while gaming but it changed drastically after few days it became 60c on idle or 90c while gaming..

to cut the long story short i did the following steps to lower the temperatures:

step 1: update windows and drivers.
step 2: repaste cpu/gpu. i used grizzly thermal kryonaut.
step 3: installed four vacuum coolers one at each vent.
step 4: installed eight 8cm 12v dc fans right underneath the intake in rectangular shape (stacked for more pressure penetrations).
step 5: use the ac to cool down the ambient temperature.
note: the vacuum coolers and the dc fans are not connected to the laptop. i used external power supply (12v 5A).

i know its not the most convenient solution (noise) but at least like this i can play while I'm sure my laptop is not burning up inside...anyway..

i want to reach the lowest possible temperatures while gaming on this laptop..honestly the tempratures right now are decent they never go above 75c in most intense gaming moments otherwise its below 70c.
but still its not enough for me as im sure it could be better. im thinking about "cutting" those plastic lines shaping the rectangular intake using a mini drill (dremel) so it comes out as clean as possible and not even using a non conductive mesh to block the dust since i already took care of that (the dc fans underneath have a dust filter) and the environment where im using the laptop is so clean anyways.
but im not 100% sure about how this would effect the airflow inside the laptop as im not a specialist nor aerodynamics engineer..it could be good or it could be BAD which in this case i can fix it by just buying a new bottom cover..
so before attempting this irreversible action i thought maybe i should hear other people's opinions.

so you wanna make a desktop out of a laptop?? why not remove the base all together? or even better yet, hook up some custom water cooling to it

laptops these days are made to get hotter so at to extract higher performance out of them, so while you may not like it, if its not thermal throttling its fine

that wouldnt be so practical..

Laptops are made to take full advantage of the coolers they have. The higher the temperature the more heat they can extract.

Do you not trust the CPU/GPU manufacturer in setting reasonable tempurature protection?

Main: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti, 16 GB 4400 MHz DDR4 Fedora 38 x86_64

Secondary: AMD Ryzen 5 5600G, 16 GB 2667 MHz DDR4, Fedora 38 x86_64

Server: AMD Athlon PRO 3125GE, 32 GB 2667 MHz DDR4 ECC, TrueNAS Core 13.0-U5.1

Home Laptop: Intel Core i5-L16G7, 8 GB 4267 MHz LPDDR4x, Windows 11 Home 22H2 x86_64

Work Laptop: Intel Core i7-10510U, NVIDIA Quadro P520, 8 GB 2667 MHz DDR4, Windows 10 Pro 22H2 x86_64

Well there's your problem.

75C is not hot, especially for a laptop. You're fine. Better than fine, actually. Just make sure there's adequate ventilation to those bottom vents and you don't even need the (worthless) suction coolers.

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.

Spoken like a man who's never used a Sager. Back when I flipped PCs, I got my hands on a pair of Sager 15.6" laptops with i7-4810MQ processors. My hopes for an easy fix like bad RAM or a dead drive were quickly dashed when I realized that the boards had literally cooked themselves. Trust me, there are plenty of laptops out there, even from major brands, that are designed badly enough (or well enough?) that they char-broil themselves the day the warranty runs dry.

Fortunately for OP, their Acer Loser Nitro Suckface Laptop Edition does not seem to be badly designed at all as far as thermals go.

absolutely not. but i do trust that getting money/profit is their main goal.

thats good to hear.

as for the worthless suction coolers i make sure they are tightly sealed so at worse case scenario (their noise) they still have some kind of positive effect.

major companies and manufacturers  actually can produce  much better quality products at a much cheaper price but obviously that is not good for them on the long run.

Linus did a video on this once. Basically, because physics are a thing, they're useless.
