I don't believe a boot drive can

To my knowledge a local disk can't be assigned a or b. Network drives can have that assignment.

The NT kernal has a/b as reserved for non-local disks (floppies/network) which I'm guessing you are using 7/10/11 in your system.

 

I can't recall the microsoft notes that says its reserved I just remember when XP came out they had a huge document explaininig the differences between the 9x and NT kernels.
