i currently have a 6700k which seems to take forever in unreal compiling code and shaders which I think I need more cores for.

would it be a good idea to swap the CPU +mobo for a Xeon low speed but many cores?

This one is pretty cheap:

Intel Xeon E5-2650L-V3 (SR1Y1) 1.80GHz 12-Core LGA2011-3 CPU

however not sure what where to find cheap motherboard for this ideally to be compatible with my ddr4 2 sticks and M2 SSD.

Go on aliexpress, there are these 16 core e5 2683 v4 es going for 145$

Pair that with a chinese x99 or dual socket "x99" and you have a cheap 16 or 32 core setup

Btw ddr4 ecc as long as you dont go above 2400mhz is relatively cheap compared to 2666mhz and higher rams, so maybe get 32gb ecc ddr4 2400

Maybe overclock that 6700k if you havent already, pretty stupid having a k cpu and not overclocking it tbh

Safe volts are 1.45v and maybe even 1.5v if you can keep your temps under 80c, pref under 75c for stability reasons

Id save up a bit more. Your giving up a lot of clock speed going to that xeon, so most things will run slower. Id try to get something like a 11700/5800x here instead.

would the xeons around 2.5-3ghz be more favourable?

Are 6900K/6950X CPU's cheap enough to consider... I don't know how lowend of a board you could go for that to be reasonable.
I bet the boards (Cost) gets extremely prohibitive to the idea..
I guess if its closing in on 200+$ you may consider new for Faster cores (of a 6-8Core platform)

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Yea you want more clock speed, but lots of things are single threaded, so id probably stick with your current cpu for now until you can get something likea. 11700/5800x.
