Server Build Suggestions

Good morning/evening everyone,

I had this old server that I was running Plex server, for network file sharing, hosting some websites and stuff like this but now that I got a quite powerful laptop I do not need my old PC and I was thinking of making 2 servers in a Rack.

I want now with this upgrade to have Docker containers too, so I was thinking to make the old server with Linux running the websites and all the containers that I want, as for the other server to make it with Windows server to handle the file sharing stuff.

So I would like to give me your opinions, suggestions and ideas, how should I do it, is it a good idea?

  • Software suggestion/opinions
  • Hardware server backplates/PSU/UPS suggestion
  • Networking cables/switches/routers
  • Suggestion about the Rack and server cases (with hot swap preferably)

Personally i would sell the old hardware and just use 1 server saving on power costs.
But if you dont pay for power ignore this. 😄

Make the slow PC a NAS, with all the disks in it.

Then fast(er) PC use for everything else, just 1 SSD in.
If it needs data it can take from NAS pc.

When i ask for more specs, don't expect me to know the answer!

Well it's true that I don't think about the electricity since either way I used to have 2 PC all the time open so not much will change there 😛
