Renting out server - monthly

Hello all,

 

I'm looking to rent out an unused server I have - preferably for game hosting - and I was looking for some guidance to get started. 

 

Specs:

 

Internet: 150/30 Mbps

CPU: Ryzen 5950x

RAM: 64GB 3600Mhz

SSD: 1TB

OS: Planning on using Ubuntu Server

If you arent using it, just sell it. 

Too much hassle to rent it out. Dont forget you need to do regular backups, and probalby they would want some level of control..e.g if its Minecraft, they might want the ability to add mods, change configs, restart it, etc...

Where is this server located? is it in a datacenter or at your home? if it is located at your home you're going to have some risks.

 

The follow risks:

 

• Due to it being on residential ISP line, your ISP might block certain ports, not allow your customers to use the server properly.
• Risk of the server getting infected and even getting hacked without having proper security measures in place.
• Linked to point 2, require a firewall to keep your network safe and separate your server from your home network.
• Updating the server or maintaining the server. If a major problem happens, are you knowledgeable enough to keep the server up? Do you also know how how to patch the server and run updates to it?

I know this sound crazy, but if you want to host a server in home, you better know what you're doing.

Being a 5950X, it's not a server at all, just consumer parts being tasked as a server. Which is fine for personal usage, but trying to 'rent out' the server without any remote management or all that fancy server stuff is a hard sell.  You could at best get some friends to chip in while you host some gaming servers for everyone to enjoy.

Even with an actual server the point still stands. Remote management is useful yes, but it is very dangerous to open up the server management to the internet. If that is what you are implying.
