I installed and and believe I have updated WINE. Do I have to install steme and proton in order to get warthunder to play? Also there are some retro games I would like to play if possible. I heard from another source that older programs are more likely to run because they would have had time to adapt it for wine or some other modification. Do I need to do anything to install and get them to run?

Steam has a Linux Client that you need to install. With in the steam settings you will enable Proton. Once thats installed then you can just install your games. Keep in mind that now all games are supported, and some games might be meh as they are not supported well.

From my understanding you should not need Wine. As Proton thru steam will do the job. Wine could be useful for non steam games or other software however.

According to the games page this game should run in Linux natively. PoP OS is based on Ubuntu so there is a good chance it will work.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
