Samsung 850 EVO SSD Speeds Out of the Roof?

I just bought a new 1TB Samsung 980 NVMe, so like usual I installed it and started running benchmarks. While doing so I ran benchmarks on my other drives, and my old 850 EVO SSD shocked me. Speeds double/triple of my newer m.2's. How is this happening? How is this even possible?

RAPID or whatever the hell Samsung calls it is turned on. Basically uses RAM as cache for the SSD which makes the speeds look immensely better than they actually are.

Bear in mind that this is running at SATA III speeds, which is around 600MB/s. NVMe is significantly higher, sometimes over 5x the speeds of SATA III.

That's not what they're talking about. Their SATA drive is using a caching system that's showing much higher speeds than are possible.

Oh ok, I thought they were asking about the interfaces of the two drives for a second. But yes, that caching system is the reason here for sure why the speeds are quick.

Thanks for the reply's and welcomes, I've been a long time lurker and have watched Linus videos since the beginning.

 

I just couldn't understand why my drive shows ~10,000 MB/s read/write speeds, but when I google "CrystalDiskMark 850 EVO" other peoples show ~500 MB/s read/write, what is should be.

RAPID mode uses RAM to Cache Read and Write data to some degree..and RAM is FAST.

Disable Rapid mode in the Software, Reboot and Benchmark for more accurate real life out of the box specs.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz
