Should I upgrade?

I have a 9600k + rtx 3070 for about 7 months now and wanted to ask if should I upgrade my cpu? I play at 1440p144hz only aaa games like rdr2, valhalla, re8 and did not have any problem with those games, running with nice fps. But I have seen a lot of people saying I should upgrade. Is it worth going for a 9900k or a 5600x? People with 9600k/8600k and 3060ti/3070/3070ti how is your experience?

This sounds like a reason to not upgrade.

There's no reason to upgrade something that does what you want it to just because other people think you should. If that makes sense. Unless you want to spend the money.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

instead of going for a more expensive older generation cpu try the newer gen at a simmilar price point, really you probably won't need an upgrade unless you experience a bottleneck.

If you are doubting the usefulless of an upgrade than I suppose it is not worth it. I would recommend getting your moneys worth out of your current CPU, especially since you are content with the current performance.

At this point wait till the new CPUs come out. The 3070 is taking the brunt of the work at 1440p

Who are all these people saying you should upgrade?

Truly, a 9600k is just an 6/6 CPU and an 8/16 would be more stout but not necessary at that resolution.

As someone who just upgraded from a 9600K to a 5900X, I can tell you this: If you are just gaming, the 9600K is fine.

Granted, my graphics card is only a 2060 Super, but I have noticed basically no difference in games going from the 9600K to the 5900X when playing at 1440p. Especially not in AAA games, like Control. Because I'm a nerd, I benchmarked several games using identical settings to see if there was a measurable difference. Usually, there was not. My benchmark numbers for Control, averaged over 3 runs, are:

9600K + 2060S = Avg FPS: 70.4 - 1% Low: 56.5 - 0.1% Low: 26.0

5900X + 2060S = Avg FPS: 69.6 - 1% Low: 53.1 - 0.1% Low: 24.8

So basically, margin of error considering it's only over 3 runs and Control doesn't have a built in benchmark, so I ran them all manually. Like most AAA games, it's 100% GPU bound at 1440p. The experience in game feels identical between the two setups.

The only AAA gaming thing that did improve was the game launch time for Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition. The 9600K was holding up unpacking the files for the game, as for some reason that is very CPU intensive. The game took a couple of minutes to launch with the 9600K, but with the 5900X, the game launches in about 30 seconds. That is certainly a noticeable difference. However, once actually in game, there was no difference at all.

And I don't think that alone would justify an upgrade - just use those 90 seconds to go refill your waterbottle LTTStore.com

What I'm trying to say is this: the 9600K is still a great CPU for gaming. There are a couple of titles where it can stutter because it lacks HT, but since you aren't having that problem, there's no need to dump hundreds of dollars into a new setup since you're looking at marginal gains.

What? It's 6/6!

@SuperFlower What motherboard do you have?

9900K is a nice upgrade but only if the price is low enough and your motherboard has decent VRM.

Wow thanks for the information. Well my 9600k and 3070 is working just fine, only playing story games like rdr2, valhalla, metro etc dont play online at all.

Think I'm going to hold on until ddr5 tho.

Everyone who knows me knows I'll say "hell yeah, upgrade!" because I'm that one guy that's always startin' shit.

But no, I wouldn't upgrade unless you're seeing a lot of stuttering or your GPU utilization just isn't where you want to be.
