Storage for Gaming/Video Editing Build

Minibray

Hi there! I'm currently trying to figure out what I should do about my current storage configuration for the build I'm working on.

Budget (including currency): Roughly 4K USD. I'm trying to not go over $2.8K before the graphics card, since it's around $1.1K itself.

Country: USA

I'll mainly be working with:

Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, Lightroom Classic, Photoshop, and games like Siege, Insurgency Sandstorm, and Battlefield (4/1/V/2042).

I'm constantly recording video clips through GeForce Experience's InstantReplay feature. Currently, my old video files are 60fps 1920 x 1080, but I'm looking to start recording 2560 x 1440 with this new setup. I expect to used up a lot of space for video files, as all of my games take up around 1TB at most. For my video and photo projects, I regularly have issues exporting files too big for my current SSD so they're really heavy exports.

Currently, my parts list looks like this:

Spoiler

(**  means I already bought it)

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X 3.4 GHz 16-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Lian Li GALAHAD AIO 240 RGB 69.17 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
Motherboard: Asus PRIME X570-PRO ATX AM4 Motherboard
Memory: G.Skill Trident Z Neo 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL16 Memory**
Storage: Samsung 980 Pro 2 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive**
Storage: Western Digital Blue 4 TB 2.5" Solid State Drive (The Issue)
Video Card: Asus GeForce RTX 3080 10 GB ROG STRIX WHITE OC Video Card
Case: Lian Li O11 Dynamic Mini Snow Edition ATX Mid Tower Case**
Power Supply: Cooler Master V SFX Gold 850 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular SFX Power Supply
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Home 32/64-bit
Case Fan: 2 Lian Li UNI SL120 58.54 CFM 120 mm Fans 3-Pack**

Current total is around 2.7K USD without tax.

But the main thing I'm looking at is storage, which is currently setup as a 2TB Samsung 980 Pro and a 4TB Western Digital Blue SSD.

Basically I have two questions;

  • Should buy the 4TB SATA SSD, or if I should just get another 2TB m.2 NVME? (The Motherboard can have 2 Gen4)
  • Which large External Drive (>10TB) should I look at to expand later on?

Well in the end it comes down to what you plan on doing. The 2tb nvme would be faster so it would be super nice when transferring large files but it is also smaller so if you need more than 4 tb then obviously this would be a problem. Also its not like you can add in extra drives later so Idk if it really matters what choice you choose now
