Kindle Paperwhite Frozen

My wife's Kindle Paperwhite is frozen after an update today. It appears to be bricked, doesn't respond to hard reset (holding the power button 60+ seconds) and is just sitting at the Kindle screen.

 

Any thoughts or things to try? It's 4 years old so I'm out of warranty even though it seems to be software related.
