Anyone a Test Engineer?

I'm looking to move to a Test Engineer position from a Datacenter sys admin and I am just curious what the day to day work is like? My biggest concern is creating and writing tests as I don't really have a basis for what this means. In my mind you are given a spec sheet and it says proc 1A should be able to sustain 3Ghz for 20 seconds and consume no more than 90W. So you then would write a test in Python? Or maybe C, C++, or Java?

I understand the other parts like talking to consumers, engineering team, and the overall gist I'm just not sure what writing a test exactly looks like or entails. Thanks

So when you say how to do so do you mean conceptionally like a technical document for another team to follow or actually like sit down and write it in python/c/c++ yourself? So for example lets say you have a math-coprocessor that's going to go in a PCIE slot. I know the constraints and standards of PCIE so I would say make sure it doesn't exceed this wattage from the PCIE slot. Then would I go and make a test to verify that's true? So a worst case scenario benchmark to draw the max amount of power and see if it has exceeded the PCIE standards?

I used to be a Software Test Engineer years ago, but seems to be very different from Hardware as far as the day to day work. 

Most of my work consisted of drafting out scenarios, and then writing test cases for those scenarios. I mostly used software testing suites which avoided coding since it would often be automated browser interaction (interacting with login scripts, filling/submitting forms, etc...) as I mostly worked on web apps (typically validated back end applications manually, or worked with vendors as they wouldnt allow us access to the back ends). 

 

A lot of it was more about understanding projects, business needs, what the objectives were, working with developers to test in phases (POC, Black box / White box testing, UAT, etc...)

 

In my position 'writing test plans or cases' was logically writing out in plain english, the scenarios that should or could occur. Only once you've written out your test cases and things you should be looking for, you then start working on how to make those happen (which could include writing automation scripts).

How strenuous was your job day to day? Were people constantly waiting on you and demanding things be done yesterday? To be honest everything about a test engineer sounds fun except the programming part. I really struggle with it and often need help or end up figuring out how to outsource it. I conceptually understand things very well but translating that to written code is very hard until I've done it. Then I can do it without thinking. Is that just how programming is? I'm just trying to not set myself up for failure.

As far as writing code though I did very little due to my type of testing largely being able to use existing testing software. Yours is obviously much more niche, so not sure if you'd have a software engineer assisting with writing custom testing scripts, or how that would work.

That makes sense. Also I just got done with an interview and I think I had the wrong idea of the testing part they meant. I believe they are more referring to deploying hardware and testing it to make sure it works properly and then handing it over to a customer. So any scripting would be to automate tests to validate that each component works and isn't DOA. MUCH easier and straight forward then what I had in mind so that's good.
