Budget (including currency): $500 USD

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Will be performing DOD 3-pass for SAS drives

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

Hello everyone.  I'm here because I was trying to get this figured out on my own, but I got a little overwhelmed.  Thank you for any help you can provide.

My needs are as follows:

From time to time, my department will receive various HDDs, some of which we're asked to keep as potential spares.  We receive any possible mixture of 2.5" & 3.5" drives, including all makes and models, but always SAS.

Per policy, we're required to perform a minimum of a DOD 3-pass wipe on all drives before they're eligible for re-use.  The volume of drives we need to wipe at any given time is rather low, I don't see us needing to wipe any more than 1-4 drives at a time.  My struggle is how to do this efficiently.  Ideally, I'd like to be able to purchase, or build a machine that will accept and recognize the drives without any configuration changes (specifically hoping to avoid needing to change any RAID settings, etc), and be able to execute the wipe via DBAN, or another similar tool.  I'm hoping to make this as close to plug-and-play as possible so that any member of the team can learn what to do as simply as possible.

Thank you all for your time!

Just saying, the goverment has canceled this 3 wipe policy as its bs, and one wipe is plenty. NIST has some good documents if you want to cite something

Basically get a system with a hba, then connect all the hdds, then use the autonuke option in dban and your good. DOn't use a raid card here.

As the other person said just get a random cheap machine. Like an storage server or whatever from ebay and dump your drives in there. Then nuke them with dban or a linux distro and a script/tool of your choice.

Plenty of raid cards around that can be set up to just go and see any drive as it's own.
