Games, VR via virtual desktop, some video/photo editing

Looking to upgrade my system, My kids an I built 2 system during the lockdown last year. It was fun for them to build the computers they would end up using

for their online classes. We followed all the steps from Linus Tech tips and everything worked out well, and my kids ended learning something about building computers.

For me I am looking to upgrade this machine. I play games against my son and I am constantly getting slaughtered. I go months with winning.

I am hoping to gain a slight edge. I have to try something.

Current setup:

CORSAIR Vengeance RGB PRO 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3200MHz CL16 DIMM 1.35V

MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX Socket AM4, Dual Channel, 2x PCI-E X16, 6xSATAIII DDR4 Boost, Core Boost,
850 power supply gold

DEEPCOOL Gammaxx L240 V2, AIO Liquid CPU Cooler,

Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3080 GAMING OC 10G - graphics card - GF RTX 3080 - 10

WD Blue™ 3D NAND SATA M.2 2280 SSD, 500GB Read: 560MB/s; Write: 530MB/s

AMD Ryzen 5 3600 6-Core/12-Thread 7nm Processor - Socket AM4 3.6GHz/ 4.2 GHz Boost,

DEEPCOOL MATREXX 55 V3 ADD-RGB 3F ATX Mid Tower

Here are the upgrades I am thinking of.

Add

CORSAIR Vengeance RGB PRO 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3200MHz CL16 DIMM 1.35V

WD Blue™ 3D NAND SATA M.2 2280 SSD, 1TB SSD, Read: 560MB/s; Write: 530MB/s **needed because 500gig is not enough.

Change:

MSI MPG X570 Gaming Pro Carbon WiFi - AMD Ryzen 2ND & 3rd Gen
AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core/16-Thread 7nm Processor - Socket AM4 3.6GHz/ 4.4 GHz Boost

Just wanted know if I am going in the right direction.

RGB is important if am going to lose I might as well do it in style.

Thanks for your Help.

Persoanlly i would go for a 5xxx series Ryzen, they are way more efficient.

Also make sure the New RAM you get uses the same chips, i tought i'd add another 16GB (G.Skill) and the EXACT same model resulted in different chips that would not work with each other.
So imho, you might be better of seeling the 16GB kit and buying a 32GB kit, so you're sure they match.

As for storage, you do not have the exchange, you can just add. So adding the 1TB SSD will make you have 1,5TB of SSD space in total.
(250GB would be enough for just OS, then get a slightly cheaper on for just your games if you really want to be fast.)

Also if you have a budget getting RGB variants just means you are lowering the performance.
Is RGB really that important? Also you can add RGB after the fact for way cheaper (altho might not look as nice).

When i ask for more specs, don't expect me to know the answer!
I'm just helping YOU to help YOURSELF!
(The more info you give the easier it is for others to help you out!)

What resolution are you playing at ? A 5000 series cpu would give you an fps boost at 1080p.

Also your current board is fine for a new cpu so no need to change it. The X570 Gaming Pro Carbon isn't very good anyway.

sorry 1080p 144hz and sometimes 4k (when not multi player)

If you are not getting the fps you expect then a 5600X/5800X would be an improvement. An RTX 3080 should be smashing 1080p though.

The 5600X review below gives you an idea vs the 3600/3700X. The review is using an RTX 2080 ti so that is more or less an RTX 3070. It also shows the 5800X.

https://www.techpowerup.com/review/amd-ryzen-5-5600x/16.html

At 4K resolution you won't really see much difference as you are more gpu bound.

The B450 Tomahawk board that you have is also fine for a 5600X/5800X so no need to change the board unless you are having issues with it.
