New CPU not working

Go to solution Solved by RONOTHAN##,

While I would recommend swapping out that 500w if you are planning on running the 9700k, if it's not booting correctly it seems like the CPU is probably dead. The 8 pin connector can handle somewhere around 300w (I forget the numbers) and I've seen systems with that CPU post with just the single 4 pin to power it. Remember, it's at idle, so it's not gonna be drawing the full 200w that it can. You can try reseating the CPU and memory to be safe, and while I would recommend it, I don't think it will solve your problem.

I bought a i7-9700k on ebay to replace my i3-9100, I could not get the pc to boot with the i7. It works fine with the i3. When trying to boot the mobo lights flash to the cpu led indicator then quickly switches to the vga led and stays there. The rest of the computer runs, like the fans and lights but it doesn't boot with the i7. I disconnected the gpu and tried to run the pc off the integrated graphics to no avail. I'm thinking it's a power supply issue. I have a 500w Smart Thermaltake psu, and the mobo has an extra 4 pin 12v cpu connector that I never plugged a cable into. The d-tier psu, vga led indicator and missing 12v connector makes me think the new cpu does not have enough power. But could it also be a defective processor?

Thanks!

Sounds like its a dead processor or just a poor power supply to be using with that hardware.

I don’t really know about cpu’s but Pc part picker says their not compatible

PCPartPicker does say "See details below."  And as @RONOTHAN##pointed out, the reason is because the CPU does not come with a CPU cooler.
