My current build is as follows:

I5-9600K CPU

RX 6900 XT GPU

16GB DDR4 3000mhz RAM

Asus Z390 Strix Motherboard

850W EVGA G2 PSU

I'm playing on 2.5K Ultrawide

I'm pretty sure my CPU is still bottlenecking me a bit even on that resolution.

Faster RAM might make a difference, but I doubt the investment is really worth it.

SO I'm thinking at upgrading my CPU down the line, the easiest option would be to add a 9700k or a 9900k without having to replace my motherboard

On the other hand there are a few generation out now So I'm wondering if it's worth it to just get a new motherboard/CPU combo

I can't really say if I have a budget for this, but I'm usually someone who looks for the best value

So what are my options? I've always stuck with Nvidia/Intel but with the market as it is, I've now purchased my first AMD product

Keeping in mind, I only game on my PC, no rendering, or any other software.

I used this site a couple of times to check for system bottlenecks. I put in your system specs and it shows you an upgraded version of your system below to compare performance.

Your 6900xt is definitely limited by your 9600k.

IMO don't get a 9700k it won't be much better than your 9600k, step all the way up to a 9900k.

Many games prefer 12 threads and the 9700k only has 8. The 9900k has 16.

A 9900k is basically a 10700, no need to upgrade your Strix board IMO.

I don't overclock my CPU, nor do I plan to, I did so with my previous CPU and ended up killing the motherboard prematurely.

So basically other than boost clocks I quit OCing.

My cooler is the noctua NH-D15.

I mean if your cpu dosent reach 85% in games its fine but the more more ghz the better it handles with high end gpus also the only way you would kill somethimg is by putting something like 1.5v to the cpu anything under 1.45 is the safe zone im sure you can try a lil oc cuz putting like 17ghz on a cpu it wont boot but there is no harm because theres not enough voltage so if you try ocing dont go over 1.45 volts and youll be fine

As others have said, aim for a 9900k. Also you're leaving some performance on the table with that D15 and no overclocking.

A RAM upgrade would probably be nice too. 3000mhz RAM isn't exactly quick. A faster set of sticks, maybe with some OCing and tightening timings, will help your system out. You might be able to OC your current RAM as well.
