Hey, I have 1x4Go and 1x2Go of RAM in my Asus Laptop clocked at 2133Mhz cl15. I wanted to upgrade to 2x8 at 2666Mhz cl19. The Gskill Ripjaws F4-2666C19D-16GRS. It refuses to boot up. I know my Laptop has trouble booting up when I switch the order of the existing sticks 2Go and 4Go sticks but I tired switching the 2x8Go modules but they dont seem to work.

My Laptop is : ASUS FX553VD

It's motherboard is : GL553VD

I checked the BIOS, it is the last version (308).

Does the motherboard not support 2666Mhz ? I think it can only handle 2400Mhz but can it not clock them down ? help

Might need to clock them down manually. Laptops can behave oddly compared to desktops.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

How I do ?

Would be a bios thing which is going to be specific for your particular motherboard.  Also “might” is a statement of uncertainty in this case.

I dont get video output, I cant go into my bios.

Could have a serious problem using that memory then. Is there a QVL(qualified vendor list)  for memory for your motherboard?  It’s a list of memory the creators tried which they know work.  It’s often largely ignored on desktops but can sometimes matter.

No, I didnt find one.

Argh. Removable memory slots with no QVL is unusual. This “Go” thing I don’t understand. Is it a brand?

Go = European Gb

1 octet = 1 byte

I think t's because it is a laptop motherboard, Asus dont think ppl will look for a QVL

Like gigabytes, gigabits, and gibibytes I suppose.
They usually don’t.  It very infrequently even matters on desktops these days.  Asus still likely tested stuff.  The data could be hard to find.  For a given speed of memory to function both the cpu and the motherboard have to be able to handle it.  Some times the cpu can handle stuff the motherboard can’t and visa versa.

So you think the system doesnt boot up because either the motherboard or the CPU dont support 2666Mhz ? The motherboard is not a desktop motherboard so it doesnt manage to clock the memory down ? I cant tweak it because I dont even get video output ? Is that right ?

I don’t know whether you may have an issue with memory speed or not.  It’s probably researchable though. I think you’ve  got a cpu series old enough that it might not.  I googled the machine model which was apparently 7th gen intel.  The motherboard search returned what looked to me like a more or less random result though so I don’t know what line of cpu you have.  Intel will sometimes gimp lower end CPU lines so they won’t support faster memory even if it’s available. Because this is a laptop it isn’t atx. Released from the requirements of modularity, any number weird things might be done by the makers so even if your cpu supports a given speed of memory the board still might not.  There might also be oddities in bios.  I’ve even see them mess with windows stuff though not in a long while.
