Ethernet is capped at 100 mbps

Hey guys, I got a new PC the other day and the ethernet speed is capped at 100 mbps. The same cable supports 600 mbps on a different PC.

I tried adjusting the cap by going into device manager > network adapters > properties of driver > advanced > speed & duplex. And adjusting the value there from "auto negotiation" to "1.0gbps full duplex". However at the status display of the ethernet port it seems to still be capped at 100mbps even after restarting, updating drivers, reinstalling drivers, updating windows.

Changing the speed & duplex seems to be google's solution but it sadly isn't solving the issue.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Are you plugged into a 100mbps device?

 

100mbit is a very common standard in a looot of things.

What is the other side of the cable plugged into? and does that device support gigabit speeds or just fast ethernet?

Ok, first things first, I would suggest resetting any changes you made to Duplex anywhere back to Autonegotiate. 

 

In a working system with all Gigabit capable hardware, everything should automatically run at Gigabit speeds.

 

What's likely happening is one of two things. Either a device in the chain isn't Gigabit capable or a cable is bad.

The cable is plugged into a router which is plugged into a fiber line. The router does support the fiber as the same cable plugged into my laptop gives 600mbps instead of 80 which the new pc gives.

Yea thats what I figured and since the cable, router and everything works fine on any other device it should be the new pc. Wondering if theres a setting I missed or a driver I should install extra? I cant think of any.

Try searching up the model of the network interface card you have and try and install a driver for it.

I find it very odd however that Windows wouldn't automatically detect the driver and set it to gig speeds.

What is the model of the router? You've definitely got a gigabit NIC, so if you have a router with gigabit LAN ports it shouldn't have an issue.

I removed the driver completely, downloaded the same version from the website on another machine and installed it from a flashdrive. That seemed to fix the issue for whatever magical reason.
